Terrifying video appears to show the moment a 17-year-old boy stood up inside a crowded Maryland mall, pointed a handgun toward a group of young shoppers and opened fire, striking a 13-year-old boy in the leg.
The shooting happened at around 6 p.m. Friday inside Westfield Wheaton mall in Montgomery County, according to police.
Footage shared on TikTok by user @anasalzaer appears to capture the gunfire erupting inside the shopping center. The mall hallway seen in the video matches images of Westfield Wheaton’s interior, and the sequence of events closely matches the account later provided by police.
In the clip, a male is seen rising from a seating area before appearing to fire two shots from a handgun toward a group of at least three people who had just walked past him.
The suspected gunman then runs away as terrified shoppers scatter in different directions.
Several people commenting on the video said they had been inside the mall when the shots were fired.
“I was at the food court,” one person wrote.
Another user responded that they were also there and “saw everyone running.”
“I can literally see my sister in this footage,” another commenter wrote. “She’s the one in the black tank top and jeans, what a close call.”
Montgomery County Police Commander David Smith said officers rushed to the mall after receiving reports of gunfire.
According to Smith, the 17-year-old suspect had been sitting near the Cinnabon on the mall’s lower level before he suddenly stood up, pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds.
“For reasons still under investigation that we don’t know, the 17-year-old stood up from a seated position there, produced a handgun, and fired several rounds,” Smith said.
One of those bullets struck a 13-year-old boy in the leg.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and was listed in stable condition.
After the shooting, the suspect allegedly ran through the mall and encountered an armed security officer near Dick’s Sporting Goods.
The security officer ordered the teenager to the ground and held him there until police arrived.
Officers took the suspect into custody and recovered the firearm at the scene.
No one else was injured in the shooting.
Police have not revealed what may have led to the attack or whether the suspect knew the victim or the other people seen near him in the video.
The names of the 17-year-old suspect and the 13-year-old victim had not been released as of early Saturday.
The Montgomery County Police Department is continuing to investigate the shooting.
