Russian President Vladimir Putin may be preparing to push Europe closer to all-out war, with alarming new intelligence reportedly pointing to possible missile strikes, drone attacks and even a ground incursion against Poland.
According to The Telegraph, U.S. officials have warned Warsaw that Russia could target critical infrastructure inside Poland as part of a deliberate attempt to provoke NATO and test whether the alliance is truly prepared to defend one of its own members.
The reported plans are said to include missile and drone strikes, along with a possible military push from Kaliningrad, Russia’s heavily armed territory wedged between Poland and Lithuania.
Officials close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki confirmed to Polish outlet Onet that his office had received repeated warnings from Washington about possible Russian plans for a conventional attack along NATO’s eastern flank.
“Washington systematically informs Poland about ever-new Russian plans for a conventional attack on NATO’s eastern flank, from which Poland is by no means excluded,” the officials said.
A separate source familiar with security discussions in Europe’s Baltic region claimed the plans are being actively debated in Moscow.
The source also warned that the Kremlin could try to blame Ukraine for any attack, potentially creating chaos and confusion before NATO leaders had time to respond.
Any direct strike on Poland would represent a dramatic escalation.
Poland has been a NATO member since 1999, meaning an attack on the country could trigger Article 5 of the alliance’s founding treaty, which states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
NATO could potentially retaliate by striking Kaliningrad, according to the report. German military officials have previously identified the Russian exclave as a possible target in the event of a wider conflict.
However, major questions remain over how deeply the United States would become involved.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded that European countries contribute more to their own defense rather than continuing to rely heavily on American taxpayers and military power.
Trump has long argued that some NATO members have failed to carry their fair share of the financial burden. He has pressured allies to dramatically increase military spending, at times suggesting the United States should reconsider protecting nations that refuse to meet their commitments.
“If you’re not going to pay, we’re not going to defend,” Trump warned allies in March 2025.
The president has also called NATO a “paper tiger,” reflecting his frustration with an alliance he believes has depended too heavily on American strength while offering too little in return.
Tensions between Washington and several European governments have reportedly worsened since the United States entered a conflict with Iran earlier this year.
Trump has publicly criticized NATO partners that refused to support the U.S. campaign, singling out German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after the German leader claimed Tehran had “humiliated” Washington by surviving American attacks.
The Pentagon later announced plans to withdraw roughly 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany within a year.
Trump has also threatened broader reductions in America’s military presence across Europe, arguing that allies who refuse to support U.S. operations should not expect unlimited American protection.
At the same time, NATO capitals have reportedly been warned about possible weapons delays as the Pentagon works to rebuild American stockpiles depleted during the Iran campaign.
The latest intelligence raises a dangerous question for Europe: Is Putin preparing to test NATO at the exact moment the alliance appears fractured and uncertain?
