Congresswoman Sparks Fury After Claiming America Owes Black Women ‘Everything’

Outgoing Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett ignited a fresh political firestorm over the Fourth of July weekend after declaring that America owes Black women “everything” and warning that the country’s democracy is hanging “by a thread.”

The outspoken Texas congresswoman made the remarks during an appearance at the Essence Festival of Black Culture in New Orleans, where she spoke as Americans marked the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence.

“When it comes to answering the question of what America owes Black women, the answer is everything,” Crockett said.

She went on to argue that Black women have carried an enormous burden throughout American history, from slavery to modern politics.

“When we think about the sacrifices that Black women have made, from the moment we were stolen from our homelands and transported into this country, to the fact that Black women continue to stand as the backbone — specifically of the Democratic Party — we know that Black women are always the ones doing the labor, but we are also the ones that are the first targets of any harm,” she said.

The Essence Festival, which is connected to Essence magazine, describes itself as a celebration of Black culture, community and commerce. The New Orleans event also featured a performance by rapper Cardi B and a speech from former first lady Michelle Obama.

Crockett used the Independence Day setting to urge Americans to honor Black women, crediting them with contributions ranging from inventions to preserving the nation’s political system.

“So, this Fourth of July, I say celebrate a Black woman that you know, because whether it’s an invention that she made, or whether it’s the very democracy that still hangs by a thread right now, there is a Black woman to thank for her contributions,” she said.

The comments quickly spread across social media, where critics accused Crockett of turning a national holiday meant to unite Americans into another divisive political moment.

“I thought the point of Independence Day was to celebrate America as a country, not individuals no matter what race they are,” one user wrote.

Another rejected Crockett’s warning about the state of the country, writing, “Democracy is not hanging by a thread. That’s insane.”

A third critic said, “Your skin color doesn’t make you special.”

Others focused on Crockett’s looming departure from the House.

“Thank God in six months she’ll be gone,” one commenter wrote.

Crockett is leaving Congress after choosing not to seek re-election to her House seat. Instead, she launched a campaign for the U.S. Senate in Texas but lost the Democratic primary to state Rep. James Talarico, who presented himself as a more moderate candidate capable of competing against Republicans statewide.

The two-term congresswoman also faced a more difficult path back to the House after the boundaries of her congressional district were redrawn in a way that made the seat more favorable to Republicans.

Crockett has repeatedly drawn attention for combative remarks and viral clashes, while critics have accused her of using inflammatory language and racial politics to raise her national profile.

During a separate interview with television host Sherri Shepherd, Crockett complained that there was “no preparation” for the criticism she receives and argued that the attacks reflect a broader pattern of disrespect toward Black women.

Crockett’s office did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

  1. As an American whose forebearers fought for the Union, who also has Yaqui Indian and Hispanic blood, I do not believe that anyone owes me anything, or that I owe anyone else more than treating them fairly, and well as people. Any obligations from the pre-Civil-War period have long passed their statute of limitations.

  2. Why in the hell do we owe ANYBODY ANYTHING?? I’m a 74 yr old white widow, I’ve worked since i was 14. Supported myself till 58. NOBODY ever paid me for anything!! Black, white, brown or purple…….get our & work. This country offers lots of opportunities to improve & better your life…..do it!!

    1. Ask her how much money she had when she went in as a Congresswoman and how much she has now and where it came from. She has done her share of destroying America and taking taxpayer money.

  3. Human beings come in every age, color, nationality, religion and gender. Very wealthy people come in every age, nationality, color, religion and gender as do poor people. Please stop using the color argument on every issue especially today when no one is forced to remain in America. Sadly, many more people of every age, color, nationality, religion, and gender are killed in many other places all over the World. Check them out, in Nigeria, and the middle East many are killed as they sleep because they are a different religion. Again, no one forces anyone to stay in America, and thousands would change places with anyone who wants to leave America so they can come and live here.

  4. That’s bull. I was legally blind raising 2 little girls, Did the world we me everything? Heck NO! I pressed cloths in a dry cleaners and supported my girls on my own, sometimes working 60 hours a week. People need to have more determination and pride.

  5. The woman needs to go to her bed and sleep with her head up her behind. No different than when she is so-called awake.
