ABC’s “The View” reportedly rejected an effort by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to bring two controversial democratic socialist congressional candidates onto the program, as the Disney-owned network faces mounting pressure over an FCC investigation into its political guest bookings.
Representatives for Mamdani reportedly pitched an appearance featuring the mayor alongside Democratic congressional candidates Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez. However, the daytime talk show indicated that it could not accommodate the two House hopefuls while ABC proceeds cautiously amid the Federal Communications Commission’s ongoing equal-time inquiry, according to Semafor.
The reported rejection comes as tensions between “The View” and Mamdani’s political allies appear to be growing.
Some members of the mayor’s circle were reportedly angered by the show’s recent coverage, particularly comments made by co-host Sara Haines about Avila Chevalier.
“I’m gonna full-blown call her an antisemite,” Haines said during a recent broadcast. “She would proudly call herself that, trust me.”
According to Semafor, one of Mamdani’s aides later complained to ABC executives and warned that Haines’ comments could influence whether the mayor and other democratic socialist politicians agree to appear on the show in the future.
Avila Chevalier, a fierce critic of Israel who has also expressed support for abolishing prisons, defeated five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat in Manhattan’s 13th Congressional District.
Queens Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, meanwhile, secured the Democratic nomination in the open 7th Congressional District.
The reported booking decision suggests that the FCC investigation launched by Chairman Brendan Carr may already be affecting programming decisions at one of television’s most high-profile political talk shows, despite the agency taking no formal enforcement action against ABC so far.
The New York Post reported last week that a conservative media watchdog was urging the FCC to reject the renewal of ABC’s broadcast licenses over what the group described as partisan political bias.
Once a major campaign stop for politicians across the political spectrum, including President Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Kamala Harris, “The View” has reportedly avoided hosting candidates in competitive midterm races since Carr announced the FCC inquiry in February.
The show has continued to feature politicians who are not currently facing closely contested elections.
Vice President JD Vance appeared on the June 16 episode, while Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, joined the May 26 program to promote his new book.
Sen. Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat seeking reelection this year who did not face a primary challenger, also appeared on the show in March.
The FCC investigation centers on “The View’s” Feb. 2 interview with Texas Senate candidate James Talarico.
Carr has argued that Talarico’s appearance may have triggered the federal equal-time rule, which generally requires broadcast stations to offer comparable opportunities to competing candidates seeking the same office.
ABC has strongly disputed that interpretation.
The network has argued that “The View” has been recognized by the FCC for more than 20 years as a legitimate news interview program and is therefore exempt from the equal-time requirement.
In a petition submitted to the agency, ABC claimed the inquiry could “upend decades of settled law and practice” while chilling constitutionally protected speech.
The FCC has opened a public-comment proceeding but has not yet issued a final decision or announced any public enforcement action against the daytime program.
The reported clash highlights the growing pressure facing legacy television networks as regulators and conservative critics place greater scrutiny on political programming and allegations of unequal treatment during election season.
The Post has requested comment from ABC, Mamdani, Avila Chevalier, Valdez and the FCC.
