Dog Accidentally Turns on Toaster Leading to Deadly House Fire

A Maryland family lost three beloved pets after officials say one of their dogs accidentally turned on a toaster, sparking a fast-moving house fire while the homeowners were away.

The heartbreaking blaze broke out shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday at a single-family home on Foxglove Court in Belcamp, according to the Abingdon Fire Company. Fire crews rushed to the scene and were able to bring the flames under control in about 20 minutes, but the damage had already been devastating.

No people were injured, as the owners were not home when the fire started. Neighbors managed to rescue two dogs from the burning house, but a third dog and two cats did not survive. The family’s bearded dragon was later found alive and made it through after spending 24 hours in critical care.

Investigators said the fire began in the kitchen before spreading to other parts of the home. According to officials, one of the family’s dogs had jumped onto the kitchen counter and accidentally activated the toaster, igniting nearby combustible items.

The dog believed to have switched on the toaster was one of the two pets rescued by neighbors.

A Ring home security camera captured the terrifying chain of events, showing the dog jumping onto the counter and pawing at items in the kitchen. Officials said the footage helped deputy state fire marshals determine where the fire started.

The cause of the blaze was officially ruled accidental.

Photos shared by the Abingdon Fire Company showed heavy damage inside the home, which was left scarred by fire, smoke, soot and water. Officials estimated the blaze caused about $150,000 in structural damage, along with another $50,000 in damage to the family’s belongings.

The fire serves as a chilling reminder of how quickly an ordinary household appliance can turn dangerous, especially when pets are left alone near kitchen counters.
