A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked the family of Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman. The reality TV star’s 13-year-old step-grandson, Anthony, was shot and killed in what police are calling an “accidental” shooting over the weekend in Naples, Florida.
According to an incident report obtained by Newsweek, emergency dispatchers “heard screaming” during the initial 911 call, which was quickly upgraded to a shooting response. When officers arrived, CPR was already in progress, and police immediately took over life-saving efforts. Anthony had suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and had lost a significant amount of blood. Sadly, he did not survive.
Police say the shooting happened on Saturday and involved Gregory Zecca—Dog’s stepson and the father of the victim. Zecca is the biological son of Dog’s current wife, Francie Chapman. So far, no charges have been filed, and authorities with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office say the death is under investigation but consider it an “isolated incident.”
“This is a devastating tragedy,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told Newsweek. “We’re conducting a thorough investigation that includes witness statements, forensic analysis, subpoenas, and search warrants.”
The Chapmans are reeling from the loss. “We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident,” Duane and Francie Chapman said in a statement to TMZ. “We ask for continued prayers as we mourn the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony.”
Anthony had appeared in several heartfelt family posts on social media. In July 2024, Francie shared a video of Anthony dancing with Dog to Usher’s “Yeah!” during a birthday celebration at a Navy Blue Angels event. “We had the best weekend celebrating our grandson,” she wrote.
In a 2022 post, Francie praised Zecca and Anthony with a family photo, saying, “Greg Alex & Anthony, Dog & I Love You Guys Dearly! Thank You For Always Standing By Us.”
Dog the Bounty Hunter, 72, rose to fame tracking fugitives across America on reality shows like Dog the Bounty Hunter and Dog’s Most Wanted. He has 13 children from multiple relationships and has endured his share of personal tragedy, including the 2019 death of his fifth wife, Beth Chapman, from throat cancer.
This latest loss adds another painful chapter to Dog’s life—a man known for bringing justice to others, now facing an unbearable loss in his own home.
