Hunter Biden is once again at the center of a stunning financial controversy — this time claiming under oath that neither he nor the rest of the Biden family has enough money to pay his massive legal bills.
The former president’s son made the eye-opening statements during a deposition connected to a bitter lawsuit over approximately $17 million in legal expenses.
“My family doesn’t have any money, and it’s not their debt anyway,” Hunter testified, according to a recently released transcript.
“I don’t own anything of any value other than — and I don’t know the value of it — my paintings which I painted myself.”
The sworn testimony paints a remarkably bleak picture of Hunter’s finances, despite his years of lucrative foreign business dealings, high-profile art sales and proximity to one of America’s most powerful political families.
Hunter Biden Says He Owns Almost Nothing
Hunter claimed he has no investments, savings or other significant property that could be used to satisfy the disputed legal debt.
“I don’t even have any other assets at all, stocks, bonds, anything like that, savings accounts,” he testified.
In another extraordinary admission, Hunter said, “I don’t have any assets. I don’t own a car. I don’t own a phone.”
The testimony was given as part of Hunter’s ongoing legal battle with Winston Taylor, the firm that represented him during federal criminal prosecutions, congressional investigations and defamation lawsuits against several of his critics.
The firm maintains that millions of dollars in legal bills remain unpaid. Hunter, however, argues that the lawyers understood from the beginning that he could not afford the staggering costs and that the parties had expected to eventually “work something out.”
Law Firm Reportedly Looked to Democratic Donors
Winston Taylor reportedly tried to connect Hunter with wealthy donors and powerful figures in Democratic political circles who might have been willing to help cover his rapidly growing legal expenses.
Those efforts apparently failed to solve the problem.
The dispute has now become about more than whether Hunter owes the money. His sworn testimony raises a much larger question: Even if the firm wins, is there anything available for it to collect?
Hunter’s claim that his family is effectively broke is likely to attract intense scrutiny, especially from Republicans who have spent years investigating the Biden family’s foreign business relationships and financial arrangements.
Hunter’s Paintings May Be Among His Only Assets
Hunter’s artwork could emerge as one of the few potentially valuable assets in the case.
His paintings previously attracted attention after some reportedly sold for substantial sums despite Hunter having no established background as a professional artist before his father became president.
Hunter said during the deposition that he did not know how much the paintings were currently worth.
The financial dispute comes after years of legal trouble for the former president’s son, including federal gun and tax prosecutions, congressional investigations and multiple lawsuits involving material connected to his abandoned laptop.
Hunter said publicly in 2025 that he was approximately $17 million in debt because of his legal expenses.
Joe Biden Reportedly Faced His Own Financial Pressures
The court battle has also renewed interest in the finances of former President Joe Biden.
Previous reporting cited in the case claimed the former president left the White House with roughly $800,000 in personal debt, rising property taxes on his Delaware residence and fewer lucrative speaking opportunities than he may have expected.
However, Joe Biden reportedly receives more than $400,000 per year through government pensions accumulated during his decades in the Senate, his vice presidency and his four years in the White House.
Despite those reported payments, Hunter insisted his relatives do not have the money to rescue him — and that they should not be expected to pay a debt he says belongs solely to him.
Legal Victory Could Be Targeted by Creditors
Hunter did recently secure a major courtroom victory when a judge awarded him approximately $1.7 million in a defamation case against former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne.
Winston Taylor has reportedly moved to place a lien on that judgment in an attempt to recover at least some of the money it claims Hunter owes.
Even that potential source of cash may be difficult to access. Byrne is believed to be outside the United States, raising questions about whether Hunter will ever receive the full judgment.
The legal fight now leaves Hunter in an unusual position: He has a multimillion-dollar court award on paper, millions more in disputed legal bills and sworn testimony claiming he does not own so much as a car or cellphone.
For a man whose family occupied the White House just over a year ago, the claim is certain to raise eyebrows — and provide Republicans with even more reasons to ask where all the Biden family money went.

He has to be one of the worst persons in the world for handling finances. Given the amount of money he made with the Ukrainian gas company, as well as the Chinese deal, he should be flush with funds. I guess all those call girls and the cocaine messed up his finances.

Hard to believe anything that comes out of Hunter’s mouth. With all the money he and his family (including Joe) skimmed, stole, blackmailed foreign entities and governments out of, that none is left. It’s not like Hunter gave it to the children he does not acknowledge even though DNA test have proven him to be the father. Plus they still have multiple homes. property worth millions and millions of dollars they use to create cash flow. Hope the creditors go after them without mercy.
