Beloved Bay Area sports broadcaster Greg Papa has reportedly been fired from KNBR while recovering from a devastating cancer battle that left him hospitalized for three months and fighting for his life.
Papa, 63, has served as the radio voice of the San Francisco 49ers since 2019 and has spent decades calling some of the biggest moments in Bay Area sports.
But just weeks after revealing the terrifying details of his health crisis, KNBR abruptly ended Papa’s run at the station — along with that of his longtime midday co-host, Greg Silver.
The stunning decision brings their popular Papa & Silver program to an immediate end.
Papa was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 2025 and was forced to miss nearly the entire 49ers season. He managed to call only one game while undergoing treatment.
Last month, the veteran announcer revealed that he had finally returned home following a grueling three-month hospital stay that included multiple near-death emergencies.
Papa underwent a successful bone marrow transplant in February, but serious complications reportedly pushed his body to the brink.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, problems following the transplant “nearly killed” the broadcaster and may have caused permanent damage to his lungs.
At one point, both of Papa’s lungs collapsed. He was placed on a ventilator for approximately one week as doctors fought to keep him alive.
After leaving intensive care, Papa continued using supplemental oxygen. His health gradually began to improve, and he remained optimistic that he could return to broadcasting.
Papa had hoped to host his midday radio program from home, as he had previously done while receiving chemotherapy.
However, he acknowledged that returning to the 49ers broadcast booth would be much more physically demanding.
“Doing a football game is a different challenge,” Papa admitted.
Despite the firing, it was not immediately clear whether the decision would affect Papa’s separate role as the 49ers’ play-by-play announcer.
During his celebrated career, Papa has called games for the 49ers, the Golden State Warriors and several other Northern California sports teams. His unmistakable voice made him one of the most recognizable figures in Bay Area broadcasting.
The timing of KNBR’s decision has left fans stunned, coming shortly after Papa opened up about the darkest days of his illness and his determination to make a comeback.
Veteran Bay Area radio personality John Lund is expected to replace the Papa & Silver show.
KNBR has been contacted for comment.
