Two young brothers — just 4 and 7 years old — somehow got hold of their parents’ car keys and took off on a terrifying joyride through Oakland that ended with a woman critically injured and the vehicle smashed near a home.
The unbelievable scene unfolded Thursday morning after the children allegedly grabbed the keys to their parents’ white Toyota sedan while their mother and father were sleeping.
According to the Oakland Police Department, the car was speeding north on 35th Avenue near Mangles Avenue when it sideswiped another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.
But the chaos didn’t end there.
The Toyota continued careening down the street, struck a woman who was walking a dog in a crosswalk and then slammed near a home on the corner, according to local reports.
One witness told KRON4 that the brothers appeared to be working together to operate the car — with one child handling the steering wheel while the other apparently controlled the gas and brake pedals.
The bizarre arrangement may help explain how children so young were able to get the vehicle moving at all.
Photos from the aftermath showed the badly damaged white sedan sitting partly on the sidewalk near a concrete wall and light pole, with its doors open and debris scattered around the crash site.
A witness described an eerie silence immediately after the violent impact.
“You didn’t hear her scream,” the witness said of the woman who was hit. “You didn’t hear any of the kids make any noises. The only sound that you heard was the crash.”
The woman, who authorities said is in her 30s, was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
The two brothers survived the wreck and were listed in stable condition.
Their uncle later told reporters that the boys had taken the keys while their parents were asleep. He said the 7-year-old suffered a broken leg in the crash, while his 4-year-old brother sustained a concussion.
The children’s parents are cooperating with investigators, police said.
Authorities have not publicly explained how long the boys were driving before the crash or exactly how they managed to start and operate the vehicle.
The frightening incident remains under investigation by the Oakland Police Department.
