NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas is facing new scrutiny as details emerge about a violent fraternity fight during his college days — an incident that led to his arrest and questions about his character long before he became one of the faces of mainstream media.
Llamas, now 46, took over NBC’s flagship evening newscast in 2024 after Lester Holt’s retirement. But Radar has uncovered disturbing details from 2001, when Llamas and nearly a dozen of his fraternity brothers at Loyola University in New Orleans were taken into custody following what police at the time called a “targeted retaliatory attack” on a rival fraternity house.
According to police reports, members of Sigma Phi Epsilon — Llamas’ fraternity — allegedly stormed a rival frat house in the early morning hours after a heated bar fight escalated tensions. Windows were shattered. Furniture destroyed. A male student from the opposing fraternity was reportedly beaten, and a young woman visiting the house was shoved to the ground.
“It was chaos,” a former Loyola student told us. “They came in like a wrecking crew. People were screaming and trying to hide. Everyone knew something was going to happen after that bar fight, but nobody expected it to go this far.”
Conflicting Stories About Llamas’ Role
Llamas’ involvement remains murky even decades later. Two fraternity brothers have insisted the future journalist was “outside the house” when the attack unfolded. One told The Guardian at the time: “Tom was there that night, but he didn’t go inside. He was just caught up in the mess.”
However, another fraternity member claimed Llamas was “among about four people who were unjustifiably arrested” due to what he described as “a flawed identification process.” Police never formally charged Llamas, citing “insufficient evidence” to prove his participation in the violence.
NBC rushed to Llamas’ defense after the old incident resurfaced, issuing a statement that read:
“As an undergraduate at Loyola University nearly 25 years ago, Tom was one of 11 students arrested following a fight and alleged break-in at another fraternity. Tom, as well as most of those students, was not involved in the incident. Following extensive reviews by both the university and local authorities, Tom and those not involved were never accused of any wrongdoing.”
Still, critics accuse NBC of downplaying the story to protect its prime-time talent. Some on social media have already questioned whether the network would have shown the same restraint if this had involved a conservative journalist.
“If this were a Fox News anchor,” one viewer posted on X, “NBC would be running wall-to-wall coverage calling for his firing.”
This isn’t the first time Llamas has made headlines. Insiders say his rise within NBC has been marked by bitter internal battles — including a high-profile feud with White House correspondent Hallie Jackson, who reportedly fought hard for the anchor chair after Lester Holt stepped down.
“Hallie thought the job was hers,” a network insider said. “She was furious when executives chose Tom. There were shouting matches in the halls. It got ugly.”
Llamas, who joined NBC from ABC in 2021, hasn’t exactly endeared himself to colleagues either. Multiple reports describe him as “difficult” and “ego-driven,” including one notorious incident where he allegedly berated a producer over the size of a studio monitor.
“Big time talent, big time monitor, man,” Llamas reportedly snapped, leaving staffers stunned.
While NBC hopes the controversy will fade, Republican critics say this is another example of the mainstream media “protecting their own” while lecturing Americans about accountability.
“It’s amazing,” said media analyst John Levine. “Tom Llamas can get arrested in a violent fraternity raid, insult producers, and still get promoted to the top job at NBC. But if you’re a conservative journalist, one wrong tweet and your career’s over. That’s the double standard.”
With NBC’s ratings slipping and President Trump ramping up his 2025 re-election messaging against “biased fake news networks,” the Llamas controversy could not come at a worse time.
