Federal agents raided Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home early Monday morning as part of a federal criminal investigation reportedly focused on the Minnesota congresswoman’s immigration history.
Agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, descended on the residence October 12, executing a search warrant obtained by the Department of Justice.
The operation marks a dramatic escalation in a controversy that has followed the Somali-born lawmaker for years.
“Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice,” a DOJ spokesperson confirmed.
The department described the operation as part of an ongoing federal investigation but did not publicly disclose what investigators were searching for or whether any evidence was seized.
According to Fox News Digital, which first reported the raid, two sources familiar with the investigation said authorities are examining immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.
Omar, 44, was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a refugee in the 1990s. She became a naturalized American citizen in 2000 and made history in 2018 as one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress.
The investigation follows months of public accusations from senior Trump administration officials.
In May, Vice President JD Vance said federal authorities were examining possible immigration fraud involving Omar. White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed in September that a criminal investigation was underway, although he declined to reveal specific details.
At the center of the controversy are longstanding allegations concerning Omar’s former marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen whom she legally married in 2009.
Critics have repeatedly alleged that Elmi is Omar’s brother and that the marriage was arranged to obtain immigration benefits. Omar has strongly denied those claims, calling them false and politically motivated. The alleged family relationship has never been publicly established through conclusive evidence.
Omar has previously explained that she entered a religious marriage with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her children, in 2002. After separating from Hirsi, she married Elmi in 2009. She said that relationship ended in 2011, although the legal divorce was not finalized until 2017.
Her financial history has also drawn scrutiny.
In 2019, the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board determined that Omar had filed joint tax returns with Hirsi in 2014 and 2015, despite being legally married to Elmi at the time.
The board separately found improper campaign expenditures and ordered Omar to reimburse her campaign $3,469.23 and pay a $500 civil penalty. Those findings did not establish that she committed immigration fraud.
Questions surrounding Omar’s finances resurfaced in 2026 following amendments to her federal financial disclosures.
Monday’s search comes at a politically sensitive moment, just three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections.
Omar, a prominent member of the progressive congressional group known as “The Squad,” has frequently clashed with President Donald Trump over immigration enforcement and other administration policies. Her supporters have characterized the renewed allegations as political attacks, while administration officials insist the accusations warrant investigation.
A search warrant requires judicial authorization based on probable cause, but it does not establish that the person whose property is searched committed a crime.
As of Monday morning, no criminal charges against Omar had been announced in connection with the investigation, and authorities had not disclosed whether additional searches, subpoenas or other enforcement actions were planned.
Omar has consistently denied wrongdoing. The congresswoman’s office had not issued a detailed public response to Monday’s search in the initial reports.
The investigation remains ongoing, with federal officials facing mounting questions about what evidence prompted the raid and whether prosecutors intend to pursue charges.
