Ilhan Omar’s Answer About Ex-Husband Raises Eyebrows

Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing renewed scrutiny after giving an unexpected four-word response to a question about her former husband, just days after federal agents raided her Washington, D.C., home as part of an expanding immigration fraud investigation.

The Minnesota Democrat appeared on MS NOW Wednesday night for her first television interview since the October 12 raid. During the conversation, host Chris Hayes confronted Omar about a controversial allegation that has followed her for years: claims that she once married her own brother to help him obtain immigration benefits.

Omar, 44, strongly rejected the accusation, describing the story as an outrageous conspiracy theory. However, when Hayes pressed her on whether she could be related to her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, her response immediately attracted attention.

“Not to my knowledge,” Omar replied.

The exchange came after Hayes asked whether there was any possible truth behind the longstanding rumors. Omar maintained that the allegations originated on a Somali blog before spreading through conservative political circles.

She dismissed claims from people who allegedly said she had introduced Elmi as her brother, calling those accounts “insane.”

Omar’s campaign subsequently clarified that the congresswoman was responding sarcastically to repeated questions about an accusation she has consistently denied. The allegation that Elmi is her brother remains unsubstantiated, and no publicly established evidence has proven the two are siblings.

Still, the televised exchange comes at a particularly difficult moment for the four-term Democrat, whose immigration history is now the subject of a federal criminal investigation.

On October 12, Homeland Security Investigations agents arrived at Omar’s Washington residence around 6 a.m. with a court-authorized search warrant. According to Omar, agents spent several hours searching the property, moving from room to room before leaving with 17 items.

Among the belongings seized were cellphones, notebooks belonging to her current husband, political consultant Tim Mynett, a Somali-language book and a camera with sentimental value to the family.

Omar described waking up to loud banging and initially fearing there was a fire or another emergency in the neighborhood.

Despite criticizing the investigation, she acknowledged that the agents behaved professionally and even returned her belongings to their proper places.

She described their conduct as “intrusive but polite” and said they folded clothing while completing the search.

The investigation reportedly centers on immigration documents dating back to Omar’s arrival in the United States as a child. Federal investigators are examining whether false information was provided during her family’s immigration and citizenship processes, according to Reuters.

Omar was born in Somalia and came to the United States with her family in 1995 after fleeing civil war. She became an American citizen in 2000, when she was 17.

Investigators have also issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including some involving Omar’s relatives. Federal officials have reportedly examined questions about her birth date and whether information submitted decades ago could have affected her eligibility for citizenship.

The potential consequences are substantial. If federal authorities established that citizenship had been obtained through deliberate, material misrepresentation, they could pursue a legal effort to revoke it.

However, such a proceeding would require evidence and judicial review. Omar has not been charged with a crime in connection with the investigation and continues to deny wrongdoing.

The congresswoman also faced questions during Wednesday’s interview about another controversy involving her family’s finances.

Earlier congressional disclosures suggested that businesses partly owned by Mynett were valued between $6 million and $30 million, prompting questions from Republican lawmakers and President Donald Trump.

Omar subsequently amended the disclosure, attributing the original valuations to an accounting error. The revised filing listed the couple’s joint assets at between $18,004 and $95,000.

In September, Omar’s office also announced that the Office of Congressional Conduct had voted to dismiss misconduct allegations related to the disclosure error.

During the interview, Omar insisted that she was far from wealthy, describing herself as living paycheck to paycheck. She pointed to her family’s 2016 Toyota Camry and explained that she rents residences in Washington and Minneapolis rather than owning them.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the federal search is already affecting her personal life.

Omar revealed that she plans to leave her Washington residence after its location became widely publicized following the raid. Citing threats against her and concerns for her children’s safety, she said remaining in the home was no longer practical.

Politically, the timing has intensified an already bitter confrontation between Omar and the Trump administration. With the November 3 midterm elections approaching, the congresswoman has accused federal authorities of using the investigation to intimidate a prominent political opponent.

Administration officials have rejected suggestions that the investigation is politically motivated, maintaining that the government has a responsibility to investigate potential immigration fraud.

Omar, who is seeking reelection in Minnesota’s heavily Democratic Fifth Congressional District, remains defiant.

“I’m confident in my truth,” she told Hayes, insisting that she has done nothing wrong.

For now, the investigation continues, and questions surrounding the federal search remain unanswered. Investigators have not publicly established that Omar committed immigration fraud, while the congresswoman insists she will ultimately be vindicated.

What began as a decades-old political controversy has now become a federal investigation with potentially serious legal and political consequences — and Omar’s latest interview has thrust her back into the national spotlight.
