Hunter Biden Reveals Joe Visited Him at ‘Crack House’

Hunter Biden has revealed startling new details about just how far his father went to reach him during the darkest days of his crack cocaine addiction — including personally showing up at his Washington home with Secret Service agents in tow.

Speaking on the addiction-recovery podcast Dopey, the former president’s 56-year-old son said Joe Biden came to his home twice while Hunter was deeply addicted to crack cocaine and living a chaotic life that he has described extensively in his memoir.

“My dad showed up. He literally showed up at the house twice and just knocked on the door,” Hunter told host David Manheim.

The episode, released Aug. 28, centers on Hunter’s years of substance abuse, the death of his brother Beau, his recovery and his relationship with his family.

Hunter said his father would repeatedly call him and, when he failed to answer, sometimes come looking for him in person.

Because Joe Biden was vice president at the time, those visits were hardly inconspicuous.

Hunter recalled looking out the window and seeing a group of SUVs arrive outside. His father would then get out accompanied by Secret Service agents before approaching the door.

The National Archives confirms Joe Biden served as the 47th vice president from January 2009 until January 2017. Federal law provides Secret Service protection to the sitting vice president, explaining the security presence Hunter described.

According to Hunter, his father wasn’t there to lecture him about politics or his public image. He was trying to convince his son to get help.

Hunter recalled his father asking what they were going to do next and pressing him to come up with a plan.

But Hunter said he repeatedly made excuses, pointing to his grief, divorce and other turmoil in his life while insisting he could handle the situation himself.

One of the biggest blows had come with the death of Hunter’s older brother, Beau Biden.

Beau died from brain cancer on May 30, 2015. Joe Biden’s White House statement announcing his son’s death said the entire family was “saddened beyond words.”

Hunter has long said his drug and alcohol problems intensified dramatically following Beau’s death.

The new podcast appearance also revisits one of the more extraordinary characters Hunter encountered during his addiction — an unhoused woman and drug dealer he knew as “Bicycles.”

Hunter previously described the woman in his 2021 memoir, Beautiful Things, explaining that she eventually stayed at his Washington residence during a period when he was using crack heavily.

On Dopey, Hunter described an existence dominated by finding and smoking drugs, with Bicycles becoming part of the strange circle surrounding him during that period.

He even suggested his father may have crossed paths with her during one of his visits.

But the basic story of Joe Biden personally showing up to confront his addicted son isn’t entirely new.

Hunter discussed at least one such intervention during a 2021 interview with CBS News while promoting Beautiful Things.

At the time, Hunter said his father came to his apartment while serving as vice president after recognizing that his son was not doing well. Hunter remembered initially insisting that everything was fine before his father rejected that explanation.

The Washington Post has also reported, based on Hunter’s own accounts, that Joe Biden traveled from the vice presidential residence at the Naval Observatory to confront his son at a nearby Washington apartment during the addiction crisis.

What is new in the Dopey interview is the level of detail Hunter provides about those encounters — the SUVs outside, Secret Service agents walking his father to the door and his father’s repeated attempts to get him to make a plan for getting better.

Hunter’s account also offers an unusual glimpse at the collision between one family’s private crisis and the security apparatus surrounding one of the most protected officials in the country.

There is no public evidence that the visits resulted in a Secret Service security incident or compromised classified information.

Federal law requires protection for a sitting vice president, and the Secret Service routinely assesses risks surrounding its protectees. Hunter’s recollection establishes that agents accompanied his father, but claims that the visits themselves created a specific national-security breach remain speculation rather than an official finding.

Hunter has said in more recent interviews that he has been sober since 2019. In a May 2026 interview, he again discussed his recovery and years of addiction while describing sobriety as something he continues to protect.

Nearly a decade after the scenes he described, Hunter characterized his father’s repeated attempts to reach him as an example of unconditional parental love during a period when little else seemed capable of breaking through.

For Joe Biden, the trips apparently meant arriving at his son’s door even after unanswered phone calls.

For Hunter, they became another memory from a period he has increasingly discussed in public — this time with the unusual detail of a vice presidential motorcade pulling up outside a home consumed by addiction.
