A Missouri family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a 15-year-old boy who died eight days after suffering a freak accident involving a pair of scissors inside his high school classroom.
Jeffery Chandler was seriously injured October 5 at University City High School, just outside St. Louis, in an incident that prompted an emergency response and sent the school into lockdown.
Despite receiving medical treatment, the teenager died Tuesday, October 13, leaving classmates, teachers and relatives devastated.
Now, questions remain about how an ordinary school day ended in such an unimaginable tragedy.
According to the School District of University City, Chandler suffered an accidental puncture wound to his upper chest during class.
The school’s lead nurse and emergency responders immediately provided medical assistance before the teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The incident also prompted an educational lockdown as school officials worked to secure the building and respond to the emergency.
Authorities have not publicly explained exactly how the scissors caused the injury or what happened in the moments leading up to the accident.
For more than a week, Chandler remained hospitalized as loved ones hoped he would recover.
But on October 13, school officials confirmed that the teenager had died from his injuries.
“We are heartbroken to confirm that the student passed away from his injuries today,” the school district and University City Police Department said in a joint statement.
Officials expressed condolences to Chandler’s family and the entire school community, acknowledging the devastating impact of losing a student under such unexpected circumstances.
The unusual nature of the incident prompted investigations by both the school district and local police.
The University City Police Department’s Bureau of Investigation interviewed those involved and examined the circumstances surrounding the injury.
According to authorities, investigators found no evidence suggesting the teenager had been deliberately harmed.
“No foul play is suspected,” the district confirmed.
School officials also conducted a separate internal review and said all relevant individuals had been interviewed.
Although investigators have described the incident as accidental, they have not released a detailed account of how it happened.
The medical examiner has also not publicly provided additional findings explaining the precise medical circumstances that led to Chandler’s death.
The lack of further details has left many questions unanswered, but authorities have emphasized their responsibility to protect the family’s privacy.
Meanwhile, grief has spread throughout the University City High School community.
Chandler’s aunt, Jessica Chandler, shared emotional tributes on Facebook after learning of her nephew’s death.
Other relatives and classmates also posted messages remembering the teenager and expressing their disbelief over the tragedy.
“I will miss you forever and love you forever,” one school friend wrote.
The sudden loss has been especially difficult for students who were at school when the accident occurred and learned days later that their classmate had died.
Recognizing the emotional impact, the district announced additional counseling and mental health resources for students, employees and families.
“The wellbeing of our University City students, staff, families and community remains our highest priority,” officials said.
Crisis counselors have been made available throughout the district, with additional support stationed at University City High School.
The district is also directing families to community organizations that specialize in grief counseling and helping children cope with traumatic experiences.
Among the resources being offered are Provident Behavioral Health, Annie’s Hope and Behavioral Health Response, which provides round-the-clock crisis assistance.
The tragedy has also drawn attention to the dangers posed by everyday classroom objects when an unexpected accident occurs.
Scissors are used routinely in schools, but sharp objects can cause serious injuries depending on how an accident unfolds.
In Chandler’s case, investigators have not identified any criminal conduct or publicly announced whether changes to school safety procedures will be considered.
For now, the focus remains on supporting a grieving family and school community.
What began as an ordinary Monday at University City High School became a medical emergency that claimed a young life eight days later.
And as friends and relatives remember Jeffery Chandler, the Missouri community is left mourning a teenager whose future was cut tragically short.

It is sad that authorities have to investigate everything as though foul play was involved. I just assumed that he got stuck with scissors. Scissors have always scared me when I have to carry them and I carry them as I learned when I was extremely young.
