Father Throws Kids Off Parking Garage Before Jumping Himself

A quiet Pennsylvania community has been left devastated after a father allegedly killed his two young children in a shocking murder-suicide, prompting school closures and an outpouring of grief.

Patrick Lynch, 42, is believed to have forced his 8-year-old son, James, and 6-year-old daughter, Caroline, from a parking garage before jumping himself in Mt. Lebanon, an affluent suburb about five miles south of Pittsburgh, according to authorities.

Police and emergency responders rushed to Municipal Way near Washington Road shortly after 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, November 3, after receiving reports of three people lying unconscious near a parking garage behind the municipal building.

Paramedics desperately attempted to save all three, but the father and his children were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Allegheny County Police Department confirmed that preliminary findings point to a murder-suicide, although investigators have not publicly established exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the tragedy.

Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Jason Haberman made clear that authorities were not treating the deaths as an accident.

“There will be a significant amount of trauma associated with this event for the community,” Haberman told reporters.

“Everybody in the Mt. Lebanon community will know somebody involved in this incident,” he added. “We really want to send our condolences.”

The heartbreaking deaths have shaken the close-knit community, where families are now mourning two children whose lives were cut tragically short.

By Wednesday morning, a makeshift memorial had begun growing near the scene as residents gathered to remember James and Caroline. Local officials announced plans to relocate the memorial to Clearview Common, where tributes could be protected from the weather.

The tragedy also brought new attention to the family’s circumstances. A family friend told CBS Pittsburgh that the children’s mother had reportedly shared on social media that her husband lost his job in August and subsequently struggled with depression. According to that account, he had agreed to seek professional help and had an appointment scheduled for Wednesday.

Authorities have not confirmed whether those circumstances played any role in the deaths, and investigators have not announced a motive.

The Mt. Lebanon School District responded by closing Markham and Washington elementary schools Wednesday, November 4, as students, parents and teachers struggled to process the loss.

Superintendent Melissa Friez said the district was deeply saddened by the deaths and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy. Students attending other district schools were permitted to remain home with excused absences, while counseling and additional support were made available.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public, but the investigation remains active as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths.

For a community accustomed to seeing families gather along its neighborhood streets and outside its schools, the loss of James and Caroline has left a painful question that investigators have yet to answer: What led to a tragedy that claimed the lives of two innocent children?
