A former senior Russian official with close connections to President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s security services has reportedly died under suspicious circumstances. Konstantin Romodanovsky, 67, the ex-director of the Federal Migration Service and a figure long associated with the Kremlin’s secretive power structures, died after allegedly falling down the stairs at his country house and breaking his neck, according to Russian media.
The incident was first reported by the Telegram channel VChK-OGPU, which has ties to Russian intelligence and law enforcement. The channel claimed that Romodanovsky was in possession of sensitive documents that implicated current politicians, businessmen, and secret service officials. His death has raised questions given his deep involvement in Russia’s intelligence community and his longstanding role as an influential insider in Putin’s administration.
For years, Romodanovsky was considered one of Putin’s most trusted figures, reportedly serving as his “eyes and ears” within key government departments. Before leading the Federal Migration Service, Romodanovsky held the rank of Colonel-General in the Interior Ministry and was the first head of the FSB’s security directorate, where he was known by the nickname “Boot.” His sudden death has fueled speculation that it may not have been an accident, especially given his high-ranking connections and the sensitive nature of the documents he allegedly held.
Unanswered Questions Surrounding His Death
While initial reports attribute Romodanovsky’s death to an accidental fall, other possible causes have been suggested in Russian media, including complications from pre-existing health conditions like hepatitis C, diabetes, and heart problems, or a fall while intoxicated. Nevertheless, VChK-OGPU has noted that Romodanovsky was still active in the business world, serving on the boards of several companies controlled by the FSB.
A source cited by the Telegram channel said, “Perhaps his death is related to his latest intoxication, and he simply lost his balance.” However, the channel also highlighted that similar “accidents” have befallen other high-profile Russian officials and businessmen with close ties to the so-called St. Petersburg-Petrozavodsk group, a network allegedly tied to the Kremlin’s inner circle.
No official statement has been made regarding the precise cause of Romodanovsky’s death, which comes amidst a broader context of mysterious deaths among Russian elites during Putin’s ongoing war against Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
A Growing Pattern of Mysterious Deaths
Romodanovsky’s death is the latest in a string of high-profile fatalities among Russian officials, many of whom have died under similarly suspicious circumstances. Among them is Russian General Magomed Khandayev, 61, who was recently found dead under undisclosed circumstances. Khandayev, a senior official in Russia’s Ministry of Defense, was expected to be a key witness in a major corruption investigation involving Kremlin officials. His sudden death has fueled concerns that such incidents may be part of a larger, calculated effort to suppress potential whistleblowers or eliminate individuals with compromising information.
Similarly, former FSB colonel Maksim Yeremin, a well-known figure with a notorious past as a football hooligan, died in August after choking on a piece of meat while dining at a Moscow restaurant. Yeremin’s transition from hooliganism to working in the FSB has been a subject of intrigue, and his unexpected death at the age of 50 has led to questions about whether his passing was as accidental as it appears.
Broader Implications and Political Fallout
These deaths, particularly those involving figures with access to sensitive information, come at a time of significant internal and external pressure on the Kremlin. With Russia’s military embroiled in the war in Ukraine and the government facing scrutiny over corruption and governance issues, the timing of these incidents has led to widespread speculation that not all of the deaths are purely coincidental.
In Romodanovsky’s case, Russian MP Alexander Khinshtein, a prominent supporter of Putin, expressed disbelief at the news of his death, stating, “I can’t believe it. I spoke with him just last week. He was full of energy and plans.” Khinshtein’s remarks have only added to the sense of mystery surrounding Romodanovsky’s passing.
Despite the growing list of suspicious deaths among Russia’s elite, official statements on these incidents have remained scarce. The Kremlin has been largely silent on the matter, further fueling speculation about the true nature of these deaths.
