Congress Probes FEMA For Discrimination Against Trump Supporters

FEMA Director Deanne Criswell has committed to an inspector general (IG) investigation following explosive allegations that FEMA workers were directed to avoid assisting homes of Trump supporters during Hurricane Milton relief efforts. Criswell, testifying before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday, insisted the directive stemmed from a single rogue employee and not from agency-wide policy.

Allegations Spark National Outrage

The controversy erupted after reports surfaced claiming FEMA staff were instructed to avoid homes displaying pro-Trump signs. The directive, reportedly issued by FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington, has drawn sharp criticism from both sides of the political spectrum.

Committee Chairman Scott Perry (R-Pa.) grilled Criswell on the agency’s handling of the situation. He pressed her on whether the internal investigation would expand to include higher-ranking officials.

“The investigation includes those deployed in this incident,” Criswell stated. “We have found no evidence suggesting this went beyond one employee’s specific actions.”

When Perry suggested an independent probe by the IG, Criswell initially deflected but eventually conceded. “I will request one,” she confirmed after repeated questioning.

Former FEMA Employee Pushes Back

Marn’i Washington, who has since been terminated, claims she is being used as a scapegoat. In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Washington denied any intentional political targeting. She argued that FEMA’s training emphasizes avoiding potentially volatile situations for worker safety.

“Unfortunately, some of the more passionate Trump supporters did act aggressively during these interactions,” Washington explained. She pointed out that the agency also advises avoiding other potentially unsafe scenarios, such as homes with unleashed dogs, stressing that these policies are not partisan.

However, Washington’s statements conflict with Criswell’s testimony. While Criswell has described the incident as an isolated lapse, Washington insists FEMA leadership has long prioritized what she called “equity-focused” guidelines in its operations.

Political and Public Backlash

Lawmakers from both parties have expressed concern over FEMA’s handling of the situation. Critics argue that the alleged directive undermines the agency’s mission to serve all Americans equally during disasters, regardless of political affiliations.

“Discriminating against anyone in need of help is a disgrace,” Perry said during the hearing. “The American people deserve better.”

The allegations also sparked broader questions about FEMA’s internal culture and operational transparency.

What Comes Next?

The inspector general investigation, once formally launched, will aim to uncover whether these alleged actions were part of a broader trend or truly the result of a single employee’s decision. In the meantime, the scandal threatens to erode public trust in FEMA during a critical time as the agency responds to a record-breaking disaster season.

As the fallout continues, all eyes will be on Criswell and her ability to reassure both lawmakers and the public of FEMA’s commitment to impartiality and fairness.
