Trump Suggests Government Shut Down ‘Now’

As the nation teeters on the edge of a government shutdown, President-elect Donald Trump has ignited controversy with a bold declaration: let the shutdown happen now, under President Biden’s watch. The fiery statement comes as congressional Republicans scramble to craft a last-minute funding plan to avert disaster before the midnight deadline.

“If there is going to be a shutdown of government, let it begin now, under the Biden Administration, not after January 20th, under ‘TRUMP,’” Trump posted on Truth Social Friday morning. “This is a Biden problem to solve, but if Republicans can help solve it, they will!”

The clock is ticking, and Washington is in chaos. House Republicans have already shot down two major spending proposals this week, including a sprawling 1,500-page bill that would have provided $100 billion in disaster relief and farm aid. Under heavy pressure from fiscal hawks like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, GOP leaders balked at the high price tag.

A Nation on the Brink

The current fiscal standoff is unprecedented in scope. If no deal is reached, the government will partially shut down, halting non-essential services while law enforcement, national security, and critical benefits like Social Security continue.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Freedom Caucus members are reportedly meeting with incoming Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and Vice President-elect JD Vance to draft a new, scaled-back funding plan. However, skepticism looms about whether any proposal can pass the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Democrats Push Back

Democrats have decried the GOP’s tactics, accusing Republicans of catering to billionaire donors while abandoning American families. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) labeled the second rejected bill as “a handout for Republican lawmakers’ billionaire donors.”

The White House has also condemned the impasse. “President Biden supports the bipartisan agreement to keep the government open, help communities recovering from disasters, and lower costs — not this giveaway for billionaires that Republicans are proposing at the 11th hour,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Trump’s Vision: Reshape the Debate

Trump’s approach goes beyond short-term fixes. Early Friday, he doubled down on his demands, suggesting the debt ceiling be extended until 2029 or abolished entirely. “Congress must get rid of, or extend out to, perhaps, 2029, the ridiculous Debt Ceiling. Without this, we should never make a deal,” Trump stated.

The president-elect’s call for immediate action highlights the deep divisions within Washington. As tensions rise, Americans brace for the possibility of a shutdown that could ripple across the economy and further polarize the political landscape.

What’s Next?

With hours remaining, both parties are locked in a high-stakes game of political brinkmanship. Will cooler heads prevail, or is the nation headed for a shutdown under the Biden administration? The next few hours will decide the fate of millions.

As the crisis unfolds, one thing is clear: Washington’s fiscal battles are far from over, and the drama has only just begun.
