California Judge Kills Wife During Drunken Fight While Watching ‘Breaking Bad’

A prominent Orange County judge is facing trial for the fatal shooting of his wife during a heated argument about finances, a case that has stunned the local legal community and drawn national attention.

Prosecutors allege that 74-year-old Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, a long-serving figure in California’s judiciary, fired a single deadly shot at his wife, Sheryl Ferguson, inside their Anaheim Hills home on August 3, 2023.

A Spiraling Argument Turns Deadly

The evening began with an argument over money while the couple dined out, according to lead prosecutor Seton Hunt. By the time they returned home, tensions had only escalated. Judge Ferguson, reportedly intoxicated, continued the dispute while watching the critically acclaimed crime drama Breaking Bad. At some point, prosecutors say, Sheryl Ferguson mocked her husband, daring him to brandish a firearm.

“She called his bluff,” Hunt told jurors. “He took the bait.”

According to prosecutors, the judge retrieved a loaded handgun from his ankle holster and shot his wife in front of their adult son, Phillip. Within moments, Ferguson reportedly grasped the weight of his actions.

“I killed her,” Ferguson is heard saying on police bodycam footage, which was played in court. “I did it.”

Shocking Aftermath Captured on Bodycam

Authorities arrived to find Phillip Ferguson desperately attempting CPR on his mother. Meanwhile, Judge Ferguson was reportedly in a state of shock.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be sitting here in handcuffs,” he said as officers restrained him.

Before his arrest, Ferguson sent a chilling message to his colleagues. In a text to his court clerk and bailiff, he wrote:

“I just lost it. I just shot my wife. I won’t be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I’m so sorry.”

Defense: A Tragic Accident, Not Murder

While Ferguson’s legal team does not dispute that he fired the shot, they argue that the shooting was unintentional.

“This was a tragic, terrible accident,” defense attorney Cameron Talley told the jury. He claimed that Ferguson had initially made a playful hand gesture mimicking a gun during the argument. When Sheryl Ferguson sarcastically told him to point a real weapon, he allegedly did so “without realizing it was about to go off.”

Talley emphasized that Ferguson, a veteran judge and former prosecutor, had no history of domestic violence. However, prosecutors pointed out that he kept an arsenal of 47 firearms and over 26,000 rounds of ammunition in his home, raising concerns about his access to deadly weapons.

Trial Unfolds in Nearby Courtroom

To avoid conflicts of interest, the trial is taking place in Santa Ana, away from Ferguson’s usual jurisdiction. The case has drawn attention not only for its sensational details but also because of Ferguson’s prominent role in the legal system.

Following his arrest, the judge was initially released on $1 million bail, but a later violation — involving alcohol consumption — landed him back in jail. He was subsequently re-released on a $2 million bond.

Legal experts expect Ferguson to take the stand in his own defense, setting the stage for a dramatic courtroom showdown. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

  1. Never mind gun control, how about judge control. These judges do as they pleased, without any kind of repercussions. Judges have supreme authority, there is definitely something wrong with that.
