Grammy-Nominated R&B Star Dies in Tragic Car Crash at 63

Angie Stone, a Grammy-nominated R&B powerhouse and pioneer of neo-soul, died early Saturday morning in a devastating car crash at the age of 63. Authorities confirmed that Stone was traveling in a Sprinter van with her entourage when the vehicle flipped and collided with a tractor-trailer on a highway in Alabama. Stone, the only fatality, was en route to Atlanta after a performance.

Her sudden passing has left fans and fellow musicians in mourning. “Angie was a force,” said longtime collaborator and fellow singer Jill Scott. “She wasn’t just a singer; she was a storyteller, a poet, and an inspiration to so many of us.”

A Life Devoted to Music

Born Angela Laverne Brown in Columbia, South Carolina, on December 18, 1961, Stone discovered her passion for music in the church, where she first honed her powerful voice. By the late 1970s, she had cemented her place in history as a member of The Sequence, one of the first female rap groups, whose hit “Funk You Up” laid the foundation for future hip-hop artists. The song has since been sampled by major acts, including Bruno Mars and Dr. Dre.

Transitioning to R&B in the 1990s, Stone found mainstream success with her debut solo album, Black Diamond, which went gold. Her rich, soulful voice and deeply personal lyrics resonated with audiences, particularly in hits like “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” and the timeless classic “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”

A Legacy of Influence and Advocacy

Stone’s influence extended far beyond music. She championed female artists and Black musicians, pushing for greater recognition in the industry. “She believed in mentoring, lifting up young talent,” said producer and friend Lenny Kravitz. “She never forgot where she came from and always made sure others had a chance.”

Beyond her music, Stone also made waves in Hollywood, starring in films such as The Fighting Temptations alongside Beyoncé and the hit comedy Ride Along with Kevin Hart. Her presence in reality television, including R&B Divas: Atlanta, showcased her unwavering passion for the genre she helped shape.

Final Words of Hope

Weeks before her passing, Stone shared a heartfelt message with fans on Instagram: “God gave me this gift, and I have shared it with the world. Even now, I ask my Creator what’s next because I have so much more to give.” Those words now serve as a poignant farewell from an artist who always sought to give more.

Stone is survived by her son, daughter, and two grandchildren. Details regarding memorial services will be announced soon. A statement from her representatives read: “Angie Stone’s voice and spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those she touched.”
