15-Year-Old Water Polo Star Collapses, Dies During Tournament

A promising young athlete, 15-year-old Lucas Osuna, died suddenly during a water polo tournament in Miami on Friday, March 28, leaving family, friends, and an entire community reeling from what’s being called an “unfathomable loss.”

Lucas, a sophomore at the prestigious Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, collapsed during competition while representing the Miami Whitecaps Water Polo Club. Lifesaving efforts were made immediately by referees and parents on-site—but tragically, they weren’t enough.

Lucas’ father, Mike Osuna—a fire department driver-operator with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue—shared the tragic news in a Facebook post that’s now being circulated widely throughout the community.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the unfathomable loss of our beloved son, Lucas Michael Osuna, aka Thor,” Mike wrote. “In true superhero fashion, he embodied perseverance, determination, and overcoming all the obstacles life threw his way.”

In the wake of the tragedy, a Meal Train was set up to help support the Osuna family, allowing friends and neighbors to provide meals or make donations. The link has seen overwhelming support as messages of love and prayer pour in from all corners of the city.

Friends Remember a Loyal and Loving Teen

The Miami Whitecaps shared a tribute on Instagram with a photo of Lucas flexing in the pool. “Lucas Osuna, you will forever be in our hearts. An amazing, smart, kind-hearted and hilarious person. Our team will not be the same without you.”

Classmates described Lucas as someone who was always looking out for others. “He was a genuine person,” said Justin Otero, a fellow sophomore at Belen Jesuit. “If you ever needed something, he was always there.”
