While conservative juggernauts like Joe Rogan and Mel Robbins continue to dominate the podcast world, Michelle Obama’s new show is fighting just to stay relevant.
The former First Lady’s latest media project — a podcast called IMO — has landed at #34 on Spotify’s U.S. charts, weeks after launching with considerable media hype. Even with celebrity guests and the Obama brand behind it, the show is failing to break into the top tier.
Meanwhile, The Joe Rogan Experience continues its reign at the top — despite being a constant target of liberal media outlets and Democrat officials. The Mel Robbins Podcast and Amy Poehler’s Good Hang round out the top three, proving once again that listeners are gravitating toward authentic voices, not polished political brands.
Michelle Obama co-hosts the podcast with her brother, Craig Robinson. The show premiered March 12 with two episodes. According to public data, the first episode drew 335,200 views, while the second, featuring Hollywood actress Issa Rae, dipped to 194,258 views. A March 19 episode with actor Seth Rogen and wife Lauren earned 250,773 views.
Despite these numbers, IMO has yet to show staying power in the highly competitive podcast arena. It’s faring slightly better on Apple Podcasts, where it’s ranked #21 overall, and #4 in the Education category — a broad label critics say is often used to pad rankings.
“Michelle Obama’s podcast is a glorified talk show with D.C. polish,” said conservative commentator Jake Bryson. “It’s carefully curated nostalgia, not real insight. Americans want truth, not rehearsed family stories.”
The show leans heavily on lighthearted banter and personal anecdotes, often circling back to Barack Obama. In the debut episode, Michelle shared how her husband struggled with being on time early in their marriage:
“I’ve got this husband who’s like, when it’s time to leave — it’s 3:00 — he’s getting up and going to the bathroom,” she told her brother. “I was like, dude, dude, 3:00 departure means you’ve done all that, you know?”
While the podcast paints a family-friendly picture, critics question the timing and motive. With increasing speculation about whether Michelle Obama could be a 2024 or 2028 Democrat contender, many are wondering if IMO is more than just a creative project.
“This isn’t about storytelling,” said radio host Jimmy Failla on Fox News Saturday Night. “This is brand-building, plain and simple. The Obamas don’t do anything unless it has political payoff.”
In a more candid moment, Michelle revealed that she originally opposed Barack’s run for president, and had to be talked into it by her brother:
“I mean, we knew Barack was smart and, you know, ambitious,” she said. “But you talked me into supporting his run.”
She added bluntly, “We’ve done enough crazy stuff.”
Critics note the irony: The same woman once hesitant about her husband’s campaign is now emerging as a media mogul — at a time when many in the Democratic Party are worried about Biden’s chances and quietly floating her name as a potential replacement.
As whispers of political ambitions grow louder, many conservatives see the podcast for what it is: a soft re-entry into the political spotlight under the veil of entertainment.
Meanwhile, America’s working families, veterans, and patriots continue turning to voices that speak the hard truths — not the Hollywood-scripted memories of the elite.
