Fireball in the Sky: Plane Explodes in Boca Raton, Killing 3

A quiet Florida morning turned into a scene of horror Friday when a twin-engine plane burst into flames and slammed into the ground near a busy overpass in Boca Raton—just minutes after takeoff. The fiery crash claimed three lives and injured a driver in a nearby vehicle as debris rained down and flames engulfed the area.

Witnesses say the explosion sent a column of black smoke rising over Interstate 95, halting traffic and prompting chaos on the roads and nearby railroad tracks.

“It was like something out of a movie,” said 31-year-old Josh Orsino, who was stopped at a red light on the overpass when the plane went down. “I saw palm trees start catching on fire. I thought maybe an oil truck exploded. But then I saw the smoke and realized this was way worse.”

The aircraft, identified as a Cessna 310, had just departed Boca Raton Airport at approximately 10:20 a.m., bound for Tallahassee. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane crashed just a few miles west of the airport near the intersection of Military Trail and Glades Road.

Officials confirmed that all three passengers aboard were killed instantly. Boca Raton Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Michael LaSalle described the aftermath as catastrophic. “The aircraft exploded on impact, creating a fireball. One nearby vehicle was affected, and the driver was injured. Several roads remain shut down, and recovery efforts are ongoing.”

The plane’s fiery descent also forced a car off the road and onto the railroad tracks, leading to a halt in train service along that stretch. Tri-Rail quickly suspended service between Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton stations, establishing a bus bridge for stranded commuters.

Miguel Coka, who works near the airport, said he heard a loud rumble before the crash. “It was so low, way too low. And then boom. The building shook. We saw the flames from the balcony.” He recorded video of the dark plume of smoke rising into the sky—now circulating widely on social media.

Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer released a statement shortly after the tragedy: “We are heartbroken by today’s crash. We are working closely with the FAA and emergency responders to gather the facts. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

Federal investigators from the NTSB and FAA are now on the scene, piecing together what went wrong in the final moments of the doomed flight.

The crash comes less than a day after a separate air tragedy rocked the East Coast. On Thursday, six people were killed when a sightseeing helicopter plunged into New York’s Hudson River. That chopper, carrying a Spanish family on vacation, reportedly broke apart in midair just minutes after departing Manhattan.

As of Friday afternoon, portions of Military Trail remain closed, and local police are urging drivers to avoid the area. Glades Road and the I-95 overpass have since reopened eastbound and westbound.

But the shock is still fresh.

“We’re used to small planes flying around here,” said one local resident. “But nothing prepares you for something like this. That fireball… it’s something I’ll never forget.”
