Prince Harry is once again attacking the British establishment—and this time, he’s pointing fingers not just at the royal family, but at what he calls “the same institutions that preyed upon” his mother, Princess Diana.
In a fiery two-page statement released Friday, Harry blasted the British government and palace aides after losing a legal battle to reinstate taxpayer-funded police protection during his visits to the UK. The ruling, delivered by a British court, effectively upholds the decision that Harry—now a private citizen living in California—does not qualify for the elite security detail he once enjoyed.
Harry called the decision “deeply unfair and politically influenced,” saying that “the establishment” is more focused on preserving its own power than ensuring his family’s safety.
“This all comes from the same institutions that preyed upon my mother,” Harry wrote, in language that appeared to cast the British state and palace officials as shadowy bad actors. “They continue to incite hatred towards me, my wife, and even our children, while at the same time protecting the very power they should be holding accountable.”
Royal Family Pulls the Strings, Harry Claims
The Duke of Sussex didn’t hold back, suggesting that palace insiders directly interfered with his attempts to secure protection—particularly through their influence over RAVEC, a secretive committee that determines royal security arrangements. According to Harry, palace staff played a hidden but powerful role in RAVEC decisions, even prior to his and Meghan’s 2018 wedding.
“I’ve since learned the names of those involved,” he added. “Many of them conveniently retired right after playing their part.”
The most startling revelation? Harry says RAVEC had decided before his 2017 engagement that Meghan Markle, despite joining the royal family, would receive no state protection—an unprecedented move that he claims only reversed after he demanded to know who would be held responsible if something happened to her.
Courts: You Gave Up Privileges When You Moved
The British court wasn’t swayed by Harry’s emotional plea. In a written judgment, the court emphasized that Harry’s relocation to the U.S. was a game-changer.
“The Duke’s change in status is what changed the equation,” the judge wrote. “Even if an additional threat assessment had been conducted, it would not have altered the outcome.”
According to the ruling, the Risk Management Board would likely have confirmed Harry still faces threats, but that alone wouldn’t justify taxpayer-funded security—especially now that he’s a private citizen making global media deals from Montecito.
A Political Fight in Royal Clothing?
The case has sparked questions over the true nature of Harry’s campaign. Was this really about safety—or power?
Royal watchers in the UK and America are split. But among many conservatives and royal traditionalists, Harry’s actions are increasingly seen as an entitled attack on British institutions by a celebrity who gave up his responsibilities but still wants the perks.
“You can’t walk away from duty, sign a Netflix deal, then turn around and demand security paid for by the very nation you left behind,” said British commentator Piers Walker. “It’s fantasy politics mixed with Hollywood ego.”
Is Meghan the Real Target—or the Strategy?
The timing of Harry’s latest move is also drawing attention. Meghan has recently begun re-emerging in public life, appearing at brand launches and Hollywood events. Some believe Harry is ramping up the drama to stay in the headlines.
Others, however, worry that this is a deliberate attempt to reframe the royal split as a tale of persecution—especially among American audiences sympathetic to Meghan’s racial identity and outsider status.
But for many in the UK, especially among pro-monarchy conservatives, Harry’s crusade looks less like bravery and more like betrayal.
“It’s painful to watch a prince weaponize his mother’s legacy while undermining everything she believed in about service and duty,” said former royal aide Mark Thompson. “This isn’t justice—it’s revenge dressed up in legalese.”
What’s Next?
Harry says he’ll now appeal directly to Britain’s new Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, asking her to “urgently review” the security process.
But don’t expect much sympathy. Cooper, a Labour Party veteran known for her tough-on-crime stance, is unlikely to bend under pressure from a prince-turned-podcaster.
With the royal family remaining publicly silent, and King Charles reportedly unwilling to intervene, the split between father and son seems more permanent than ever.
And for many Americans watching from afar, the once-admired prince now looks more like a man fighting battles of his own making.
