Soros-Backed Prosecutor Accused of Shocking Race-Based Plea Policy

“This isn’t justice—it’s social engineering,” says top Trump-era official.

The Biden Department of Justice—under mounting pressure to appear neutral—has launched a high-profile civil rights investigation into Mary Moriarty, the far-left Hennepin County Attorney in Minneapolis, over a controversial policy directing prosecutors to consider a defendant’s race when negotiating plea deals.

Critics are calling it “affirmative action for criminals,” and now the DOJ is stepping in to find out whether Moriarty’s office is violating the Constitution in what some are calling the most overt example yet of racially biased law enforcement under the banner of “equity.”

In a May 2 letter obtained by media outlets, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Acting Associate Attorney General Chad Mizelle, and Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon informed Moriarty that her race-based plea policy could be depriving citizens of their federally protected rights.

“The investigation will focus on whether Hennepin County is illegally using race as a factor in prosecutorial decisions,” the letter reads. “We take seriously any pattern or practice that undermines the equal protection of the laws.”

Prosecutors Ordered to Weigh Race Before Offering Pleas

The firestorm began after Moriarty—elected in the wake of George Floyd’s death and buoyed by support from radical donor George Soros—introduced a formal “Negotiations Policy” earlier this year. The policy instructs prosecutors to take “racial identity” into account and “identify and address racial disparities at decision points.”

Critics argue this means violent offenders may get lighter sentences if they are minorities, while white defendants could face harsher penalties—solely based on skin color.

“This is race-based discrimination under the guise of progressivism,” said Dhillon, who is leading the probe. “It’s not just wrong—it’s dangerous.”

Background: Who Is Mary Moriarty?

Moriarty, a former public defender turned activist DA, took office in January 2023 promising to overhaul Minnesota’s justice system. Her campaign was bankrolled by groups linked to George Soros, who has poured millions into electing left-wing prosecutors across the country.

Moriarty rose to power amid the chaos of the 2020 BLM riots and pledged to hold police “accountable.” But critics say her policies have gone far beyond reform—and straight into radicalism.

“She’s letting violent offenders walk while punishing police officers who risk their lives,” said one Minneapolis police sergeant who asked not to be named. “It’s backwards, and now it’s costing lives.”

Repeated Missteps—and a Growing Backlash

Moriarty has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Last year, she charged State Trooper Ryan Londregan, who is white, with murder in the shooting of Ricky Cobb II, a Black suspect wanted for multiple felonies. After intense public backlash—and pressure from law enforcement—Moriarty quietly dropped the charges.

“She used that officer as a political prop,” said Brian Peters of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association. “Then she walked away when the facts didn’t fit her narrative.”

Last month, she declined to press charges against a staffer for Democrat Gov. Tim Walz who allegedly vandalized six Tesla vehicles—a case that conservatives across the state condemned as proof of a two-tiered justice system.

“This is the same office that gives violent criminals a break and ignores left-wing rioters,” said GOP state Sen. Steve Drazkowski. “If that’s not politicized justice, I don’t know what is.”

DOJ Says ‘No Conclusions Yet’—But All Eyes Are Watching

In the letter, DOJ officials stressed that no final judgments have been made. Still, the investigation is being led by the Civil Rights Division’s Special Litigation Section, with a full review of the office’s policies underway.

Moriarty has yet to comment on the investigation. The DOJ has requested her cooperation and a meeting to “set parameters” for the inquiry.

Pam Bondi, who previously served under President Trump, framed the moment as a wake-up call for Americans concerned about law and order.

“Public safety can’t be dictated by racial quotas,” Bondi said at a Friday press conference. “Justice must be blind. If it’s not, we don’t have a justice system—we have a political machine.”

The investigation could have national ripple effects, particularly as more Soros-aligned prosecutors push similar race-conscious reforms in cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia.

“This is about much more than Minneapolis,” Bondi added. “This is about the soul of American justice.”
