A New Jersey mall became a battleground Saturday night after a TikTok-fueled “linkup” spiraled into a chaotic brawl involving more than 300 teens — leaving one officer injured and seven minors in handcuffs.
What began as a vague online invite exploded into a full-blown riot at Menlo Park Mall, as young people from across the state swarmed the shopping center shortly after 7 p.m. Local officials say the gathering was planned and promoted on TikTok and Instagram throughout the week, encouraging teens to “pull up” to the mall without clearly stating a purpose — though many videos hinted at drama.

“This was an orchestrated flash mob,” Edison Mayor Sam Joshi said in a Sunday morning statement. “These weren’t just local kids — they came from all over New Jersey, and they came looking for trouble.”
A Social Media Powder Keg
The “Menlo Mall Linkup” trended for days online, with one post garnering over 156,000 views and thousands of likes before the event. While it’s unclear whether violence was the original intent, the digital buzz translated into real-world mayhem.
By 8 p.m., what began as a gathering of about 100 youth quickly ballooned to more than 300, overwhelming mall security and prompting Edison Police to issue a mutual aid call. Officers from surrounding towns raced to the scene as brawls broke out inside and outside the mall, shocking shoppers and employees alike.
“People were just screaming and running. It looked like something out of a movie,” said Jessica Rivera, a cashier at a clothing store near the food court. “Security tried to break it up, but it was too many kids. Then the police came flying in.”
Police Scramble, Injuries Reported
In the chaos, one Edison officer suffered a fractured ankle while trying to subdue the crowd. Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan confirmed the injury and expressed frustration at the difficulty of containing such a rapid, social media-driven event.
“Situations like this are extremely difficult to control. One minute it’s a mall, the next it’s a war zone — all because of a post,” Bryan told local news outlet My Central Jersey.
Seven minors were arrested in the melee. Charges range from aggravated assault on a police officer to disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Four of the seven teens were from towns outside Edison, confirming the event had statewide reach.
Copycat Trend?
The brawl at Menlo Park Mall echoes a disturbing pattern seen across the country. Last fall, teens sparked a similar scene at Kings Dominion amusement park in Virginia after a viral meetup, and in New York, a mall fight involving a teen gang member who dropped a loaded firearm shocked shoppers and made headlines nationwide.
Experts say these gatherings — vague, viral, and fast-moving — present a new challenge for law enforcement.
“These aren’t traditional protests or rallies,” said retired NYPD detective Steve Cardone. “They’re flash crowds fueled by social algorithms. The goal isn’t always clear, but the chaos is very real.”
No Weapons Recovered, But Concerns Remain
Authorities confirmed that no weapons were found during the Edison incident, and no teens were reported injured. Still, the sheer scale of the disruption has sparked concern among parents, mall staff, and officials.
“I will not allow lawlessness to take root in Edison,” Mayor Joshi declared. “We’re working with law enforcement and mall management to ensure this never happens again.”
The Menlo Park Mall remained open Sunday but under heightened security, with additional patrols visibly present throughout the day.
As of Monday morning, no further arrests had been announced, but officials say investigations into the social media accounts involved are ongoing.
“This isn’t kids just hanging out,” said one mall shopper. “This is a new kind of violence — and it starts on your phone.”
