At Least 60 Dead After Fire Engulfs Shopping Mall (Video)

A newly opened five-story shopping mall turned into a deadly inferno this week, killing at least 60 people and leaving 11 more unaccounted for after flames tore through the Hypermarket Mall in Kut, Iraq. The fire has sparked outrage, demands for accountability, and questions about what went so horribly wrong just five days after the mall opened its doors.

The fire erupted late Wednesday night on the first floor, reportedly after an air conditioning unit exploded, igniting what would become one of the deadliest civilian tragedies in recent Iraqi history. Within moments, the flames shot up through all five levels of the Hyper Mall, trapping shoppers and workers inside as black smoke filled stairwells and corridors.

Survivors described a chaotic nightmare.

“There was no alarm. No sprinklers. Just smoke and screaming,” said one man who managed to escape through a rear service exit. “People were pounding on locked doors. Some didn’t make it.”

Video footage shows the once-bustling shopping complex engulfed in flames, with billowing smoke visible from miles away. By sunrise, only a scorched metal skeleton and piles of rubble remained.

According to Iraq’s Ministry of Interior, most victims died of smoke inhalation, many of them discovered in mall bathrooms where they sought refuge.

“In a heartbreaking discovery, 14 bodies were burned beyond recognition,” said a health official. “Their families may never get closure.”

Rescue teams worked through the night, pulling 45 survivors from the wreckage. But as of Thursday evening, 11 people were still missing.

Ali al-Mayahi, a senior city official, confirmed that “several bodies remain trapped under the debris,” adding that the full death toll may rise.

The fire has ignited public fury in Iraq, where infrastructure concerns, corruption, and lax safety codes have long been points of contention. The governor of Wasit Province, Mohammad Jamil Al-Mayahy, declared a three-day mourning period and vowed swift justice.

“We will not show leniency,” he said. “There are suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident, and someone will be held accountable.”

In a bold move, Al-Mayahy announced criminal proceedings had already been launched against the mall owner, the building owner, and several others allegedly connected to the tragedy.

“Preliminary investigation findings will be released to the public within 48 hours,” he promised.

The mall had been open for less than a week, raising serious questions about how it passed inspection. The Guardian reports that safety equipment was either missing or non-functional.

“This wasn’t just a fire. It was a failure on every level,” said an Iraqi civil defense officer, speaking under condition of anonymity. “No sprinklers. No emergency lighting. It was a death trap.”

Outside the charred ruins, heartbroken families gathered, many clutching photos of missing loved ones.
“I sent my son to buy groceries,” one mother sobbed. “He never came back.”

As the ashes settle and the nation mourns, one thing is clear: the Hypermarket Mall fire wasn’t just a tragedy — it was a national scandal.

And now, Iraq wants answers. Fast.
