Cop Saves Fire Captain’s Daughter Trapped in Burning Car (Video)

A heroic Arizona police officer is being hailed nationwide after dramatic bodycam footage showed him pulling a fire captain’s daughter from a flaming wreck—just seconds before the car exploded.

The harrowing scene unfolded around dawn on Sunday, when Goodyear Police Officer Dakota Berry came upon a nightmare on Interstate 10: a car engulfed in flames, horn blaring, with a woman trapped inside screaming for help.

“I just heard the horn, then the screams,” Berry said in a press conference Tuesday. “There was no time to think. I ran.”

The trapped woman was 23-year-old Asharie Cheatham—daughter of Goodyear Fire Captain Simeon Cheatham.

“Help Me!”

In footage released by the Goodyear Police Department, Officer Berry can be seen sprinting toward the inferno as Asharie repeatedly honks the horn and cries out, “Help me!”

Berry doesn’t hesitate. He smashes the driver’s window with his baton and reaches through thick smoke to grab her by the ankles—dragging her bare feet-first from the blaze.

Once she’s out, Berry uses a fire extinguisher to put out flames still burning in her hair.

“I wasn’t going to let her die in there,” Berry said. “No matter what, I would’ve gotten her out.”

Both Berry and Asharie were rushed to the hospital—she in critical condition with severe burns, he with burns to his hands. Officials say she is expected to survive.

A Father’s Worst Nightmare

Only later did authorities realize who the woman was. Captain Simeon Cheatham, a veteran firefighter with decades of service, released an emotional statement:

“She is a remarkable young woman—courageous, determined, and full of life,” he wrote. “Even in the face of unimaginable pain and challenge, her resilience shines through.”

“This road will not be easy, but she has never backed down from adversity,” Cheatham added. “With God’s grace and the support of this community, I know she’ll rise stronger than ever.”

What Happened That Morning?

Officials say the blaze erupted after a violent two-car collision on I-10, though the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Three other individuals, believed to be in the second vehicle, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officer Berry had reportedly been on his way back from another call when he “stumbled across” the burning vehicle.

He wasn’t dispatched. He wasn’t told to respond. But he ran toward the fire anyway.

A City Rallies

Since the footage was released, Berry has been flooded with praise from across the country. Social media users called him a “real-life superhero,” while the Goodyear Police Department shared the video with the caption: “Heroic Goodyear officer saves young female from burning vehicle after a crash. The young female happened to be the daughter of a Goodyear Firefighter.”

Berry, for his part, is humble.

“I did what anyone in this uniform would’ve done,” he said. “You don’t think. You just move.”

As Asharie Cheatham begins what her father calls “a long road to recovery,” the city of Goodyear is rallying behind her—and the man who gave her a second chance at life.
