2 Killed and 32 Injured After a Bridge Collapses in India

What started as a peaceful Sunday turned deadly in India’s Maharashtra state, after a crowded iron footbridge crumbled beneath tourists, plunging dozens into a fast-moving river.

At least two people are confirmed dead and 32 others injured, according to local officials, after the bridge collapsed in the Kundamala area of Pune district — a scenic getaway popular among weekend travelers. Six victims remain in critical condition, fighting for their lives in local hospitals.

“It happened in seconds,” said a survivor quoted by regional broadcaster TV9 Marathi. “The bridge just gave way. We were thrown into the water — people were screaming everywhere.”

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the situation “deeply tragic,” confirming the ongoing search and rescue efforts on social media. “Multiple people were swept away,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Rescue teams are working tirelessly.”

Heavy Rain, Fragile Infrastructure

Although skies were clear when the collapse occurred, days of heavy monsoon rains had already swollen the river. The iron structure, often crowded during holidays, buckled just before noon, witnesses said.

“There were too many people on the bridge,” one local shopkeeper told reporters. “It wasn’t built to handle that weight, especially with the river flowing like this.”

The collapse triggered a rapid response, with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, local police, and emergency divers scrambling to pull victims from the water.

India’s Dangerous Bridge Legacy

This latest disaster adds to India’s growing list of deadly infrastructure failures. In 2022, a century-old suspension bridge in Gujarat gave way during a festival celebration, killing 132 people — many of them children.

Experts have long warned about the country’s crumbling infrastructure. Despite India’s economic growth, routine safety inspections and structural maintenance remain alarmingly inconsistent.

“These tragedies are not rare — they are inevitable in a system that neglects maintenance,” said public safety analyst Rajiv Deshpande. “We keep building, but we don’t protect what we already have.”

A Popular Escape Turns Deadly

Kundamala is known for its lush green hills, waterfalls, and river-side picnic spots. The iron bridge was a favorite for family photos and local tourists.

Now, it’s a disaster zone.

Rescuers continue to search for the missing, using boats and sonar equipment as families anxiously wait on the shore.

As investigations begin into what caused the failure, grieving families are left with heartbreak — and a haunting question: Could this have been prevented?
