Country Music Legend Suffers Mini Stroke Onstage, Rushed to Hospital

Country music star Ronnie McDowell was rushed to the hospital over the weekend after slurring his speech during a live performance, leading to fears he was having a stroke mid-show.

The 75-year-old was performing at the Summer Solstice Music Festival in Oley, Pennsylvania, on Saturday when fans and crew noticed something was wrong. According to Nashville station WKRN, McDowell began slurring his words and appeared confused just a few songs into his set.

His tour manager pulled him aside backstage and asked if he was okay — to which McDowell reportedly replied, “No,” expressing concern that he might be having a stroke. He was immediately taken for medical treatment.

On Monday, a spokesperson for McDowell confirmed that the singer had suffered a mini stroke. “He is doing much better today,” they shared. “They are going to run some more tests today before he heads back to Nashville.”

McDowell’s son, Tyler Dean McDowell, kept fans updated via Facebook. On Sunday, he wrote, “Just wanted to let everyone know — I made it to Pennsylvania. Ronnie Dean & I are in the room with Dad. He’s talking to us, and we’re waiting to do the MRI. As soon as I know more, so will y’all. Love Forever.”

Later that day, Tyler shared a more lighthearted moment, saying the family was doing what they could to lift McDowell’s spirits. “Brought dad some Popcorners and a Kombucha (snacks he likes). Ronnie Dean brought his comfy shoes, favorite brush, and Vietnam hat. Dad was very excited about all this — like a kid in a candy store.”

Tyler also asked for fans’ understanding and privacy. “I know you’re all concerned. I promise—no one is more worried than I am. Please understand, this is an incredibly stressful time, and right now, my focus is on my Dad,” he wrote. “If you can, pray.”

Ronnie McDowell is best known for his hit songs “Older Women” and “The King is Gone,” and has had a long and celebrated career in country music. Fans across the country are hoping for a full recovery as he continues to undergo testing.
