Broadway Star’s National Anthem Divides the Internet (Video)

Kristin Chenoweth, Broadway darling and Oklahoma native, took center stage before a packed house at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City for Game 7 of the NBA Finals Sunday night. But it wasn’t the Thunder’s performance fans were debating online—it was Chenoweth’s controversial rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that left social media ablaze.

The 56-year-old “Wicked” star belted out a dramatic version of the national anthem, ending with a soaring high note that brought the Oklahoma City crowd to its feet. Cheers and applause erupted inside the arena, with many locals proud to see one of their own representing at such a high-profile event.

But for millions of Americans watching from home, the performance struck a sour note.

“That was horrible,” wrote one furious viewer on X (formerly Twitter). “Completely ruined the anthem with whatever that high note was at the end.” Another blasted, “What the hell was that national anthem? #NBAFinals.”

Some even accused Chenoweth of disrespecting tradition. “The Kristin Chenoweth rendition of the National Anthem was a difficult listen,” another user complained, echoing calls for the NBA to “bring back classic renditions” at major sporting events.

Yet not everyone was so quick to judge. Chenoweth’s supporters fired back online, calling her performance “perfect in every way” and “one of the top five ever.” One Oklahoma fan wrote, “She brought tears to my eyes. Thank you, Kristin Chenoweth!” Another declared, “OKC got a powerhouse for the biggest game of the season.”

A third chimed in, “She is a fantastic singer. I wish they would ask her to do this more often.”

For Chenoweth, the NBA Finals gig was more than just another stage. Born and raised in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, she told local media before the game, “I never miss a game unless I’m on stage. I was a cheerleader in high school, and I loved football, but basketball’s always been my favorite. This is my team.”

She shared her excitement on Instagram, posing with an OKC Thunder mural and calling it a “dream come true” to sing for her home crowd.

Chenoweth’s performance is the latest flashpoint in America’s ongoing debate over the national anthem at sporting events. In recent years, anthem singers have come under fire for turning tradition into a spectacle, with critics calling for a return to more respectful, straightforward renditions.

Some fans say these performances should be about honoring the country, not personal flair. “The anthem belongs to the people, not the performer,” wrote one Oklahoma veteran on Facebook. “We want to stand proud—not cringe.”

As of Monday, Chenoweth’s team has not responded to requests for comment.

With social media divided, the real question may be whether America is growing tired of celebrities using the anthem to showcase vocal acrobatics. Or is this just another chapter in the culture wars over how we honor the nation at its biggest moments?

  1. Geez, when I read the headline I thought she changed the words or said something disrespectful singing the anthem. She didn’t, even though I don’t think she is a Trump supporter, I thought she sang the anthem with respect and through her heart!🌹👏👏

  2. I would have preferred it without the high note because she held it so long but many who sing the National anthem bring their own artistry to the song. So I don’t think she did anything wrong. To each his/her own.

  3. That was incredible. I don’t know anyone who can hit that note. Amazing. Those who complained are pea green with jealousy.
God bless and protect you and that incredible voice.

  4. What the hell are some people bitching about. Their criticisms are ridiculous! Kristin performed a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem with spirit, reverence and respect!
God Bless her for a job well done!

  5. Anyone who heard the National Anthem at the NBA Finals that did not like it has music appreciation deficiency to the max. Her performance was as good as watching Secretariat earn the victory in the 1973 Belmont by 37 and win the Triple Crown of Horse Racing. For certain it was the best of all time singers who ever performed ” Oh, say can you see ” National Anthem. Let us be fair and admit the NBA Champs “Thunder” and the Singer are stars from Oklahoma. Both of these stars deserve the highest respect and applause.
