Teen Lifeguard Impaled by Beach Umbrella in Freak Jersey Shore Accident: “I’m Lucky to Be Alive”

ASBURY PARK, NJ — An 18-year-old lifeguard is recovering after a horrifying beach accident left her impaled by a flying umbrella — and just one centimeter away from death.

Alex, a college sophomore working her second summer on the lifeguard team in Asbury Park, was attempting to secure a beach umbrella during last Wednesday’s brutal heat wave when a sudden gust of wind turned the ordinary setup into a near-fatal disaster.

“It all happened in seconds,” Alex told ABC 7 from her hospital bed, where she smiled and posed with the very piece of umbrella pole that pierced her upper arm. “I felt this weight and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve been impaled.’ It was surreal.”

She had been standing on a lifeguard tower trying to tie down a sun umbrella using a frayed rope — standard safety procedure on sweltering days. But when the rope gave way and the wind picked up, the umbrella launched from its stand, pulling Alex down with it.

“I tried to catch it, and the next thing I know, I’m off the stand and on the ground with the pole through my arm,” she said.

Despite the trauma, Alex remained conscious and composed. Emergency responders rushed to the scene as her fellow lifeguards comforted her and kept her cool under the intense summer sun.

Firefighters eventually had to saw off both ends of the metal rod to safely transport her to the hospital.

What doctors found was chilling: the metal shaft missed her major arteries by just a centimeter.

“She’s lucky. Very lucky,” said Joe Bongiovanni, Asbury Park’s beach operations chief. “Two inches to the left, and it would’ve gone right through her chest. She’s not even five feet tall. This could’ve killed her.”

Bongiovanni called Alex one of the toughest guards he’s ever seen. “The doctors told her six to eight weeks of recovery, and she said, ‘Great, I’ll still make it back before the end of summer.’ She’d be back on the stand tomorrow if we let her.”

Alex underwent surgery and received stitches but avoided permanent damage. The metal pole went straight through muscle and missed bone entirely — a miracle by any measure.

Still, she’s frustrated about one thing: “I was really bummed when I found out I had to take time off. I just want to get back out there,” she said.

As beachgoers enjoy the shore this summer, officials are reminding the public — and lifeguards — to double-check all safety gear, especially umbrellas that can become deadly in the right (or wrong) gust of wind.

“Beach umbrellas might seem harmless,” said Bongiovanni, “but in the wrong conditions, they can turn into missiles.”
