In a jaw-dropping turn of events, a 19-year-old Australian surfer who vanished off the coast of New South Wales has been found alive—stranded on a remote island nearly 8 miles out to sea.
Darcy Deefholts, a fit and experienced surfer from Wooli, disappeared Wednesday afternoon after heading out for a solo session at One Tree Beach, a rugged stretch of coastline known for its strong rips and unpredictable currents. When he failed to return, panic set in.
His father, Terry Deefholts, a real estate agent from Grafton, launched a frantic social media appeal that sparked a massive grassroots rescue effort. “HELP – I NEED BOATS, BEACH WALKERS, DRONES AND 4WDs and PLANES AT FIRST LIGHT,” he posted late Wednesday night. “My boy Darcy is still missing… We’re fearing the worst.”
Just after sunrise Thursday, Darcy was found alive—and miraculously well—on North Solitary Island, a remote, uninhabited outcrop nearly 13 kilometers offshore. He had somehow survived being swept out to sea and washed up on the island, alone and without food or shelter for nearly 18 hours.
“I haven’t had the chance to talk to him yet,” his father said in an emotional interview with The Daily Telegraph. “I’m just over the moon. This is a one-in-a-million miracle.”
Darcy is now recovering under medical care. Authorities have not released details on his condition, but family say he is conscious and speaking.
The rescue was led by Marine Rescue NSW, with boats scouring the coastline overnight and into the next day. “We had vessels deployed from Wooli to Coffs Harbour, covering every possible stretch,” said Inspector John Murray. “He was incredibly lucky.”
The teen’s disappearance triggered an outpouring of support across the region. Terry’s Facebook plea was shared over 1,100 times within hours. Locals turned out with boats, drones, and ATVs to help search through the night.
“Yesterday we were planning for the worst,” Terry added. “Today, we have our son back. It’s truly unbelievable.”
Darcy’s ordeal echoes another case from last year, when a man washed up on the very same island after being swept away in similar conditions—fueling his father’s hunch to send search boats toward North Solitary in the final hours.
Police confirmed Darcy had left home around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on his bike, headed to Wooli Beach. His sudden disappearance was deemed highly unusual.
“This was completely out of character,” police noted in a statement.
As news spreads of the teen’s survival, so does a sense of awe. What started as a terrifying mystery has ended in an extraordinary tale of endurance, luck, and the unstoppable power of a community that refused to give up.
