7 Children Killed as School Roof Collapses – Parents Demand Justice

A quiet morning turned into a nightmare in rural India as a school roof collapsed on dozens of children—killing seven and injuring at least 21 others in a horrific tragedy that has left the nation in shock.

The deadly collapse took place Friday morning in Piplod village, Rajasthan, as students at a government-run middle school were just settling in for the day. Seconds before their morning assembly, the roof of a classroom suddenly caved in, burying nearly three dozen children beneath a mountain of brick and cement.

“All I could hear were screams,” said one local resident who rushed to the scene to help. “We used our bare hands to pull them out.”

Officials say seven students—most of them 12 to 14 years old—were killed instantly. Twenty-one others were rushed to nearby hospitals, some in critical condition. The students were in grades seven and eight, the school’s oldest attendees.

Police officer Amit Kumar confirmed the death toll and said the structure gave way without warning. “The students had just entered their classrooms,” he said. “Then it collapsed.”

The cause of the collapse remains unknown, but furious parents and residents are demanding answers.

“This was a death trap,” said Suresh Patel, whose niece survived the collapse. “How many more kids have to die before they fix these buildings?”

Shockingly, the school was not on a list of hazardous structures recently requested by district officials. Local administrator Ajay Singh told reporters that the building had not been flagged as unsafe, despite the government’s own inquiry into crumbling infrastructure in the region.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a brief statement, calling the incident “tragic” and “deeply saddening.” He added that authorities are “providing all possible assistance,” though critics say such promises are made all too often—and rarely deliver lasting change.

Middle schools in India, particularly in rural regions like Jhalawar district, often operate in overcrowded, underfunded buildings that have not seen proper maintenance in decades. According to a 2024 education infrastructure audit, over 30% of government school buildings in Rajasthan were deemed “at risk” of structural failure.

“This is a policy failure, plain and simple,” said education reformer Priya Joshi. “Neglect killed those children.”

As news of the disaster spread, grieving families gathered outside the local hospital, some clutching school bags covered in dust and blood. A mass cremation is reportedly being planned for Saturday.

Indian authorities have launched an investigation, but for the devastated families of Piplod, no probe will undo the heartbreak.

“They went to school to learn,” said one grieving mother, her voice shaking. “Now I have to bury my child.”
