In what could be the opening salvo of the 2028 presidential showdown, Vice President JD Vance is already outpacing the Democrats’ top contenders—by just enough to make Washington sweat.
A new Emerson College poll, released Friday, shows Vance leading three of the Democratic Party’s biggest names: Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The margins are slim, but the message is loud—Trump’s right-hand man is a serious contender for the White House.
The national poll, conducted July 21-22 among 1,400 voters, shows:
- Vance: 44% | Buttigieg: 43%
- Vance: 45% | Newsom: 42%
- Vance: 44% | Ocasio-Cortez: 41%
Margin of error? ±2.5%. But even with that, the data suggests Republicans are holding ground while Democrats struggle to unify behind a star.
Spencer Kimball of Emerson College put it bluntly: “Roughly 13% of voters are still persuadable. Everyone else is locked in.” In other words, both parties are fighting over a shrinking middle—and Vance is winning, for now.
President Donald Trump, now in his second term, has often hinted that Vance could be the natural heir to his America First legacy. With Trump maintaining a near iron grip on the GOP base, Vance may walk into the 2028 primary as the undisputed frontrunner unless another conservative heavyweight steps in.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are flailing. Joe Biden’s political career is over. Kamala Harris has faded from the spotlight and is rumored to be eyeing a gubernatorial run in California. That leaves a fractured field of candidates—and no clear leader.
Pete Buttigieg, who has yet to win a national race, is seen as the establishment’s pick. But even he admitted recently in Iowa, “Democrats don’t have the best brand around here—or in a lot of places.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom, long suspected of planning a White House bid, told The Wall Street Journal in June: “I’m not thinking about running… but it’s a path I could see unfold.”
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? She hasn’t confirmed anything but is reportedly weighing a Senate run against Chuck Schumer. That would likely rule out a presidential campaign—though her 41% support in the Emerson poll suggests the progressive base still sees her as their champion.
The same Emerson poll gave President Trump a 46% approval rating—about where he’s been holding for most of his second term. That’s despite endless media attacks and Democrat-led investigations, which have largely failed to shake the MAGA base.
It’s worth noting that a separate poll from Overton Insights last month gave Kamala Harris a narrow 3-point edge over Vance. But Harris has all but vanished from the political conversation, focusing instead on state-level politics.
With the 2026 midterms on the horizon, most candidates are keeping their ambitions quiet—for now. But make no mistake, the race for 2028 is already underway behind the scenes.
Vance, a Marine veteran and populist firebrand, is quietly building the foundation for a national run. And Democrats, still haunted by their 2024 loss, are desperately searching for a message—and a messenger—to compete.
If the early numbers hold, the next presidential election may be less about Democrat vs. Republican and more about Trumpism 2.0 vs. a fractured, flailing opposition.
Buckle up.
