Small Plane Plunges Into Residential Area, Killing All 3 On Board

A sleepy Idaho neighborhood turned into a disaster zone Sunday evening when a small private plane nosedived from the sky and slammed into a building — killing all three people onboard.

The crash occurred around 5:40 p.m. just blocks from Nampa Municipal Airport. According to police, the aircraft — a Mooney M-20 registered to a company called Sleepytime PLLC — was airborne for less than two miles before it came crashing down, erupting in a plume of smoke and debris that rocked the residential street.

Witnesses reported the plane circled once before going into a steep dive. “I saw it make a wide turn, and then it just went straight down,” said local resident Kyle Harmon, who watched in horror from his backyard. “The sound was like a bomb going off.”

Nampa police and first responders rushed to the 200 block of N. Venice Street after being flooded with 911 calls. They found the crumpled wreckage of the plane embedded in a small outbuilding, which, fortunately, was unoccupied at the time.

Two of the victims died at the scene, while the third succumbed to injuries at a local hospital shortly after. Officials have not yet released the identities of those killed.

“No one on the ground was hurt,” confirmed Nampa Police Lt. Brad Childress. “It could have been much worse.”

“It’s a terrible tragedy,” Childress said during a press briefing. “Definitely, our hearts and prayers go out to the families that are involved with this. It’s never good news to receive that information.”

Mayor Debbie Kling echoed those sentiments in a statement: “My heart grieves for those who tragically lost their lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with their extended family during this difficult time.”

FAA records show the aircraft had received a new airworthiness certification just four months ago. It was registered to a business in the city of Eagle, and had a clean record.

But despite the fresh certification, the flight ended in disaster just moments after takeoff. Online tracking data from FlightAware showed the plane barely covered two miles before falling from the sky — raising serious questions about what went wrong.

Homeowners near the crash site described the aftermath as apocalyptic. “There was smoke, sirens, people screaming,” said another neighbor who declined to be named. “It looked like a war zone.”

Video footage from local news stations KIVI-TV and KTVB showed the mangled fuselage resting in a front yard, scorched and twisted beyond recognition.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched a full investigation into the crash. NTSB agents were on the scene Monday morning collecting debris, interviewing witnesses, and trying to piece together what caused the catastrophic failure.

Officials have not ruled out mechanical issues, pilot error, or other contributing factors. A preliminary report is expected within weeks, though a full investigation could take months.
