Parents Abandon Son, 10, at Airport Because His Passport Expired

A vacation took a shocking turn at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport when a couple allegedly left their 10-year-old son behind after realizing his passport had expired—choosing to board their flight without him rather than miss their holiday.

According to a viral TikTok posted by an airport air traffic coordinator, the child was stopped at the gate when staff noticed his documents were not in order. The boy reportedly needed a valid passport and a visa to travel, but instead of staying back with him, the parents allegedly arranged for a relative to pick him up and boarded the flight anyway.

“They left their kid at the airport and just… took off,” the air traffic controller said in the video, which has now been viewed over 300,000 times. “As a mother, I’m stunned. I’ve seen a lot working here, but this? This is surreal.”

According to her account, the young boy told airport staff his parents were already on the plane heading back to their home country. Staff quickly alerted local authorities, and police located the couple mid-transit before taking them to the airport’s police station to reunite with their son. It’s unclear at this time whether the parents were arrested or charged.

The video has sparked widespread outrage online, with many users questioning how anyone could prioritize a vacation over their own child’s safety. One commenter wrote, “If this is true, that’s not just bad parenting—that’s criminal.”

And it’s not the first time something like this has happened.

Back in 2023, a couple was arrested at Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport after abandoning their baby in a stroller at the Ryanair check-in desk. The pair reportedly attempted to board a flight to Brussels without purchasing a ticket for their infant. When staff told them the baby needed a boarding pass, they allegedly left the child behind and tried to head through security anyway.

Shocking footage from that incident showed stunned airport employees lifting a blanket off the stroller and discovering the unattended baby underneath. Security immediately stopped the parents, who were later arrested on-site.

While the Barcelona story is still under investigation, it’s reigniting a global conversation about air travel, parental responsibility, and what kind of consequences should follow when travelers leave common sense—and their kids—behind.
