A chilling acid attack in Honolulu has left a 30-year-old man fighting for his life, and police are urgently hunting the suspect responsible.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, the assault happened just after 10 p.m. Friday in the city’s Chinatown district. Witnesses said the victim was crossing the street when a man suddenly approached and hurled an unknown liquid directly into his face.
The Honolulu Fire Department later confirmed the substance was sulfuric acid — a dangerous, highly corrosive chemical that can cause severe burns, permanent blindness, and even damage internal organs upon contact.
Emergency crews rushed the victim to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Because of the extent of his injuries, detectives have not yet been able to question him.
Police say there is no indication the victim knew his attacker. Investigators are now combing the area for surveillance footage and additional witnesses.
The suspect is described as about 6 feet tall, last seen wearing a blue fitted shirt and a do-rag, with a camera around his neck and carrying a red bottle.
Authorities have classified the case as first-degree assault, one of Hawaii’s most serious felonies, but have not determined a motive or whether the attack may be considered a hate crime.
The investigation is ongoing.
