Saturday Night Live is facing intense backlash after shocking fans with the sudden exit of longtime cast member Heidi Gardner, who has been with the show for eight seasons.
The shakeup comes just days after SNL boss Lorne Michaels teased major changes ahead of the show’s landmark 51st season — but viewers weren’t prepared for how drastic those changes would be. Since Monday, announcements of departing writers and cast members have dropped daily, with Gardner’s exit on Thursday night sparking the biggest outrage yet.
The 42-year-old fan favorite, widely considered one of SNL’s strongest comedic voices, is leaving alongside several other players, including newcomer Emil Wakim and three-season cast member Devon Walker. For many viewers, Gardner’s departure feels like a breaking point.
One fan vented on X, “I think we should cancel SNL at this point. What’s even the point if they’re cutting so much talent already?” Another wrote, “If they’re going to keep axing the refreshing, talented newcomers without explanation, either put someone else in charge or just call it quits.”
Some pointed out that Gardner wasn’t even given an on-air goodbye. “She’s been there almost a decade and didn’t get a proper send-off? That’s just wrong,” one viewer complained on Instagram.
Gardner, who joined SNL in 2017, hasn’t publicly commented on her departure. Earlier this year, though, she admitted to feeling “sketch fatigue” after years of writing and performing, saying on Craig Ferguson’s Joy podcast, “I’ve written a lot of sketches… and it’s been a little tough.”
Her exit comes amid a wave of changes that have blindsided both fans and former cast members. Michael Longfellow, who was reportedly in the running to take over the “Weekend Update” desk, was also let go. Meanwhile, five-year writer Celeste Yim and three-year writer Rosebud Baker were cut earlier in the week.
The only confirmed returning cast member so far is James Austin Johnson, best known for his popular Donald Trump impression.
Even past cast members are shocked. Former SNL star Punkie Johnson, who left the show in 2024, called Gardner’s exit “the biggest surprise of this shake-up” and praised her former co-star, writing, “Congratulations Heidi… you are an SNL legend for life.”
As Season 51 approaches, fans are questioning whether Michaels’ attempt to “reinvent” the show has gone too far — and whether SNL can survive losing one of its most beloved stars.

SNL hasn’t been relevant for several years
Never watch not
Does anybody still watch the show? It has not been funny for at least the last 10 years.
How about either change the format or yea, cancel the show. It used to be a decent show. Now it’s the same as every other liberal run show. Bash trump. No more comedy just bash trump. It got old years ago and it’s even older now. Go back to when snl started look at the comedy then. Now look at what snl calls comedy. Trash.
Yea change the number format or drop-in off the air.
Your just not funny anymore…
