Tensions over illegal immigration reached a boiling point this week after a 24-year-old woman allegedly tried to run over U.S. Border Patrol agents who were assisting Maine authorities during the arrest of two criminal migrants.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Olivia Wilkins was arrested and faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated reckless conduct, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, and driving to endanger.
Authorities say the confrontation unfolded Monday afternoon when U.S. Border Patrol agents joined Maine State Police and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office to respond to a commercial vehicle rollover accident. Inside the vehicle were Jhoan Andres Ortiz-Calderon and Victor Hugo Cardona-Calderon — two illegal immigrants with prior removal orders and expired visas.
As agents escorted the men to a Border Patrol vehicle, Wilkins — described as a bystander — began screaming obscenities at law enforcement.
“She suddenly jumped into her car, squealed the tires, and drove straight at our agents and deputies,” a DHS spokesperson said. “This was an intentional act. She nearly hit them.”
Deputies chased Wilkins before she crashed her vehicle along a rural road. She was arrested on the spot without further incident.
According to DHS, Ortiz-Calderon had been ordered removed from the U.S. by an immigration judge but ignored the order. Cardona-Calderon had overstayed his visa and lacked a valid work permit. Both are now in federal custody pending deportation.
“This is exactly why the Trump administration has been so aggressive about enforcing immigration laws,” a senior DHS official told Fox News. “When sanctuary-state politicians and activist judges create loopholes, it puts law enforcement — and American citizens — in danger.”
Monday’s incident is just the latest in a troubling trend of escalating violence against immigration enforcement officers.
- Earlier this month, a threatening letter containing white powder was sent to an ICE office in New York City.
- Last week, a rioter in San Francisco was charged with threatening to stab an ICE officer and harm his family.
- Days ago, a Dallas ICE facility was evacuated after a bomb threat.
“These attacks are fueled by radical activists, politicians, and media outlets comparing ICE to the Gestapo,” the DHS spokesperson said. “This kind of rhetoric has consequences — we’ve seen a 1,000% increase in assaults on law enforcement officers in just the past year.”
President Trump, who reinstated strict border policies after returning to office in 2025, has repeatedly warned that “open-border Democrats” are emboldening violent behavior.
“America’s Border Patrol and ICE agents are heroes,” Trump said at a recent rally in Bangor, Maine. “Anyone who threatens them will face the full weight of the law.”
As Wilkins awaits arraignment, DHS officials say federal prosecutors may seek enhanced penalties due to the nature of the attack.
“This isn’t just about one woman losing control,” a Knox County deputy said. “It’s about protecting the people who protect America’s borders.”
