A massive manhunt is underway in Chicago after a gunman allegedly opened fire on U.S. Border Patrol agents during an immigration enforcement operation that spiraled into street chaos.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, federal agents were carrying out an immigration enforcement sweep Saturday morning in Chicago’s Little Village — a neighborhood long known as the heart of the city’s Mexican-American community — when a man in a black Jeep reportedly fired several rounds at the agents before speeding away.
Witnesses said the sound of gunfire sent residents running for cover. Moments later, angry crowds swarmed the area, throwing bricks and paint cans at federal vehicles as tension boiled over.
“It was absolute chaos,” one nearby shop owner told Fox 32 Chicago. “You could hear shouting, sirens, and what sounded like explosions.”
Authorities confirmed that agents deployed a flash-bang grenade to disperse the crowd as more people gathered in protest.
As the scene unfolded, local leaders took to social media to condemn the operation. Alderman Michael Rodriguez of Chicago’s 22nd Ward livestreamed from the scene, accusing agents of “causing all sorts of mayhem.”
“They’re doing things that are unconstitutional, that are illegal,” Rodriguez said in his Facebook post. “They are causing fear and mayhem in our communities, and that’s unacceptable.”
Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez, who represents the neighboring 25th Ward, was also present. In his own livestream, he confronted agents directly, demanding to know why federal forces were “invading” Little Village.
“This is a peaceful neighborhood,” he said. “We should not have Border Patrol here terrorizing residents.”
In a statement on X, the Department of Homeland Security called the shooting part of a “growing and dangerous trend of violence and obstruction” against federal law enforcement.
“Over the past two months, we’ve seen an increase in assaults and obstruction targeting our agents during operations,” DHS said. “These confrontations highlight the dangers our agents face daily. The violence must end.”
Chief Border Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino pushed back on social media critics who accused officers of overreach.
“Funny, you keep leaving out key facts,” Bovino wrote on X. “Including several shots fired at agents by a suspect, violent mobs throwing bricks, and assaultive subjects. We still managed to apprehend illegal aliens today in Little Village. More to come.”
As of Saturday evening, both the gunman and the black Jeep remain at large. Chicago police assisted federal agents in clearing the area and are now leading the search.
Authorities have not yet said whether anyone was injured in the gunfire. At least one person was detained during the unrest, according to local outlets.
Residents described a neighborhood on edge. “It’s scary to think it came to this,” said one woman who lives nearby. “We’ve seen protests, but never bullets flying.”
The clash underscores growing tensions between federal immigration authorities and local Chicago officials, many of whom have long resisted cooperation with ICE and Border Patrol.
In recent years, Little Village has become a flashpoint for debates over sanctuary city policies and federal enforcement actions. The neighborhood — often called “La Villita” — is home to one of the largest Mexican populations in the Midwest and has been the site of several standoffs between protesters and immigration agents.
“Chicago is a sanctuary city,” Alderman Rodriguez reminded reporters. “That means federal immigration raids have no place here.”
Federal officials have not released additional details about the suspect or the ongoing search. Both DHS and the Chicago Police Department declined to answer further questions from reporters Saturday afternoon.
“This kind of violence is not isolated,” a DHS spokesperson said. “It’s becoming the new normal — and that should alarm everyone.”
The investigation remains active. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooter or the black Jeep to contact local law enforcement immediately.
