America is reeling after conservative firebrand and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon during a stop on his “American Comeback Tour” at Utah Valley University. The 31-year-old activist, who became a powerhouse voice for young conservatives, was greeting supporters and handing out hats just moments before the attack.
Witnesses described the scene as “chaos and confusion” as students and attendees rushed for safety while Kirk was airlifted to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“This was an act of terrorism against free speech, plain and simple,” said Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). “Charlie was an American patriot, an inspiration to millions. The terrorists will not win. Charlie will.”
President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the White House on Wednesday evening, calling Kirk’s assassination “a direct attack on the soul of our Republic.”
“No one understood or had the heart of America’s youth better than Charlie Kirk,” Trump said. “This was a cowardly act of political violence. But I promise you this — justice will be swift, and we will never let evil silence the truth.”
Trump also revealed he had spoken directly with Kirk’s wife, Erika Kirk, offering his condolences and promising federal resources to aid the investigation.
Even in a bitterly divided Congress, lawmakers from both parties condemned the killing.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) called the attack a “national tragedy”:
“The idea that political violence has taken one of the strongest conservative voices of this generation is a heartbreak beyond words. Charlie was a close friend, a confidant, and a fighter for freedom.”
Democrats also joined the calls for unity. Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) said:
“Charlie Kirk was a husband, a father, and a son. Violence is never the answer. My wife Sydney and I are keeping the Kirk family in our prayers.”
Still, tensions are rising amid what many see as a disturbing escalation in politically motivated attacks.
Kirk’s assassination follows a series of high-profile attacks that have rocked the nation.
- Two failed assassination attempts targeted President Trump during his 2024 re-election campaign.
- In June, Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a shooting by an alleged extremist.
- Security agencies have warned repeatedly about growing threats against public figures as political polarization deepens.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) called Kirk’s death “a wake-up call”:
“Political violence has no place in this country — none. If we allow extremists to dictate who speaks and who doesn’t, then America as we know it is in grave danger.”
Initial reports suggested a suspect was in custody, but Utah Valley University police later clarified that the individual was released.
Authorities are now conducting a statewide manhunt and urging the public to report any information to a newly established hotline. Local residents have been warned to “remain vigilant” as FBI agents, U.S. Marshals, and Utah State Police coordinate the search.
Charlie Kirk rose to prominence after founding Turning Point USA in 2012 at just 18 years old. The organization became one of the most influential youth-driven conservative movements in the country, mobilizing students and pushing back against what Kirk called “radical leftist indoctrination” on college campuses.
“Charlie believed America’s best days were still ahead,” said longtime friend and TPUSA co-founder Bill Montgomery. “He gave young conservatives a voice when they felt silenced. He was fearless.”
A memorial for Kirk is already being planned in Phoenix, where TPUSA is headquartered. Meanwhile, President Trump is expected to address the nation in a primetime Oval Office speech Thursday night.
“This is not just about Charlie,” Sen. Lee said. “This is about whether America allows free speech to live or die.
