The left-wing outlet The Daily Beast has issued a rare public apology to First Lady Melania Trump, retracting a sensationalized story that falsely tied her to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The mea culpa comes after months of legal threats from Melania’s attorneys — and years of frustration among conservatives who say the liberal press has relentlessly targeted the Trump family with fabricated scandals.
The article, based on claims from controversial journalist Michael Wolff, suggested that Melania met President Donald Trump through an Epstein-connected modeling agent. The Daily Beast admitted this week that the piece “did not meet our standards” and quietly scrubbed it from its website and podcast platforms. The first lady shared the retraction on X, pointedly reminding Americans that her own bestselling memoir, Melania, remains the definitive account of her life story.
“Upon reflection, we have determined that the article did not meet our standards and has therefore been removed from our platforms,” the outlet wrote. “We apologize to the first lady and our readers.”
Melania, who has largely stayed above the fray of partisan attacks, did not let this moment pass quietly. Her office released a statement underscoring the damage caused by careless media hit jobs. “The first lady has been the subject of unfounded rumors for years. This case is yet another reminder that outlets must be held accountable when they sacrifice truth for clicks,” a spokesperson said.
The apology marks a victory for the first lady, who has often been targeted by unfounded tabloid speculation since President Trump first entered politics.
At the center of the controversy is author Michael Wolff, whose sensational style has long raised questions about his credibility. In 2018, Wolff notoriously teased that President Trump was having an affair — a claim that wrongly implicated then-UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Haley blasted the insinuation as “disgusting” and “highly offensive.”
Wolff has also been accused of attributing quotes to Trump insiders who later denied ever saying them. Even MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski once cut off one of Wolff’s interviews live on air, accusing him of “slurring a woman for fun.”
Despite this history, The Daily Beast ran with Wolff’s Epstein claims — and now finds itself humiliated.
The apology comes at a time when President Trump has sharpened his criticism of what he calls “fake news machines” that seek to undermine his administration and family. Conservative media watchdogs point to this retraction as proof that legacy outlets cannot be trusted.
“This is what happens when the press abandons journalism for activism,” said Brent Bozell of the Media Research Center. “The Trumps have endured years of fabricated smears. It’s about time these outlets are forced to own up to their lies.”
While liberals scramble to distance themselves from the Epstein saga, conservatives note the hypocrisy: major Democratic donors, political elites, and Hollywood insiders have all been tied to Epstein, while President Trump famously threw Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago years before his 2019 arrest.
“The record is clear,” said one Trump campaign adviser. “President Trump never tolerated Epstein, unlike the Clintons and other Democrat power players who spent years cozying up to him.”
The Daily Beast’s retreat is more than just a correction — it’s a sign of the times. In Trump’s second term, conservative America is demanding media accountability like never before. And for Melania Trump, the first lady who has weathered endless scrutiny with grace, the apology represents a long-overdue vindication.
