Hollywood doesn’t often stand with conservatives. But in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, even some unlikely voices are stepping forward to honor the Turning Point USA founder.
Over the weekend, “The Office” star Rainn Wilson posted an emotional message about Kirk’s killing. While admitting he didn’t always share Kirk’s views, Wilson said the attack marked a dangerous new low in America’s political climate.
“These are really dangerous, tragic times,” Wilson said in a social media video. “I didn’t always agree with him, but this whole idea of ‘I’m going to kill someone that I disagree with’ is disgusting and dangerous. Our hearts go out to him, his wife, his kids, his family, and all of his supporters.”
Wilson described Kirk as a man of conviction: “He was a courageous man, actually. He was unafraid to speak his truth, and would go often into hostile environments in order to do that. How many of us have that same courage?”
Kirk, just 31, was gunned down on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. The attack shocked the conservative movement and has drawn widespread condemnation across party lines. President Trump, attending a candlelight vigil in Washington, D.C., called Kirk “a patriot who loved this country more than life itself.”
The vigil, held near the Lincoln Memorial, drew thousands. Arizona State Senator Jake Hoffman (R) told Fox & Friends, “Charlie represented hope for young conservatives. He wasn’t afraid to challenge the left, and he built something from nothing with Turning Point. His loss is devastating.”
Unlikely allies are now stepping forward. Actor Josh Duhamel posted a family photo of Kirk with his wife and children, writing: “RIP Charlie Kirk. Please remember, no matter your politics, this man had a wife and two beautiful children who no longer have him. Please pray for this madness to stop.”
Fitness icon Jillian Michaels also reflected on Kirk’s legacy: “We didn’t always see eye to eye. But he welcomed me to events and his podcast. The hatred that has seeped into our culture must stop. If we give in to this anger, we lose not only lives but our very humanity.”
Even Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has often criticized today’s GOP, urged calm: “Politics has become a disease in this country, and it’s deadly. But don’t listen to the pessimists. There is a cure. We must find our better angels and walk back from the extremes.”
Wilson, who now hosts a podcast on spirituality, ended his message with a warning about division: “We need to build bridges of love and unity, especially between those we disagree with. We need to disagree better, and still know that we all love our country.”
He added that social media has fueled too much hate: “There can be and should be spiritual tools to create community and come together. How can we dig deeper to find the compassion necessary for a true spiritual revolution?”
Kirk rose to national prominence by founding Turning Point USA in 2012, building it into one of the most influential conservative youth organizations in the country. He became a close ally of President Trump, often introducing him at rallies and defending him against relentless media attacks.
Kirk’s assassination is already sparking tough conversations about the state of political violence in America. For many conservatives, the response from Hollywood figures like Wilson is a rare reminder that even in divided times, the truth of Kirk’s courage is undeniable.
As President Trump said at the vigil: “We will not let Charlie’s death be in vain. His vision for America will live on, stronger than ever.”
