A solemn candlelight vigil for Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk turned violent Wednesday night after a Black Lives Matter activist shouted “F— Charlie Kirk!” at grieving supporters.
The outburst ignited a fistfight on the steps of the Idaho state Capitol — a brawl that ended with arrests, bloodied faces, and chants of “USA! USA!”
Kirk, 31, was assassinated earlier that day while speaking at Utah Valley University, a crime that has shocked conservatives across the country. President Trump, who called Kirk “a warrior for freedom and faith in America,” ordered federal agencies to prioritize the manhunt for those responsible.
Mourners across the West gathered spontaneously to light candles, wave flags, and pray. But in Boise, peace was shattered by one man intent on provocation.
Video shows 41-year-old Terry Wilson — well-known locally for his BLM activism and prior arrests — riding into the vigil on a Lime bike with a rainbow-colored backpack. Witnesses say Wilson shouted, “F— Charlie Kirk!” into the crowd.
That’s when 51-year-old Alfonso Ayala confronted him. Within seconds, words turned into shoves, then punches. Kirk’s supporters, furious at the insult, surged forward as Wilson hit the ground. Some kicked him while others tried to break it up, shouting “Stop!”
As Wilson staggered to his feet, he screamed “free speech!” back at the vigil, drawing a sharp retort from one woman: “Get out of here!”
Boise Police moved in quickly, hauling Wilson and Ayala off to the Ada County Jail.
Wilson faces a laundry list of charges, including disturbing the peace, carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence, and marijuana possession. Police say he was carrying a firearm at the vigil.
Ayala was also charged with disturbing the peace.
“This was supposed to be a night of unity,” one attendee told the Gem State Brief. “We were there to honor Charlie, not to fight. But when you spit on his memory, don’t expect us to stand by quietly.”
Local media reports Wilson is no stranger to controversy. In 2021, he was arrested for vandalizing Boise’s historic “Seated Lincoln” statue, smearing it with paint and feces and taping signs to its body. He was given community service and ordered to pay a mere $91 in restitution.
“Lawless radicals like Wilson have been coddled for years,” said Idaho state Rep. Brent Crane. “Now we see the result — open hatred for conservatives, even when we’re mourning the murder of one of our own.”
The Boise Police Department announced a heightened security presence for the coming days, especially with 9/11 memorials and additional vigils planned.
“Our community deserves safe and secure remembrance events,” BPD said in a statement. “In light of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, our officers will maintain a strong and visible presence.”
But many conservatives say that’s not enough. “We’re tired of being sitting ducks,” one attendee told Liberty Snippets. “President Trump is right — it’s time to get tough on political violence. If the left thinks they can silence us through chaos, they’re wrong.”
Kirk’s assassination and the violent clashes at his vigils are already fueling a broader conversation about rising political violence in America. Republicans are demanding accountability, stronger law enforcement, and protection for conservative voices.
As one Trump supporter in Boise put it: “They killed Charlie. And now they’re trying to shut down his memory. But his voice isn’t going anywhere. This fight is just beginning.”
