FBI Informant Tricked Feds for Years While Preying on Victims

A chilling new look into one of America’s most disturbing cases reveals how a serial killer managed to fool the FBI while secretly carrying out a killing spree.

Former FBI agent Jonny Grusing says Scott Kimball, a convicted murderer now serving 70 years in federal prison, “made a game out of tricking the FBI” while operating as one of their informants.

Between 2003 and 2004, Kimball killed at least four people while feeding information to federal agents. He later confessed to killing as many as 21 people — and even told his attorneys the number could be closer to 50.

Grusing told Fox News Digital that Kimball thrived on manipulation. “To have someone who enjoyed manipulating us, putting stuff in our files, and then making people disappear was beyond anything I’d seen,” he explained.

Kimball’s dark path began after a 2001 arrest for check fraud. He befriended a cellmate facing drug charges, convinced him he could make the case go away, and used that connection to sell himself as an FBI informant. Shortly after, he gained his release and began targeting victims under the cover of his new role.

One of those victims was Jennifer Marcum, a young woman Kimball lured away while framing his cellmate for plotting a murder-for-hire scheme. By February 2003, Marcum was dead — and Kimball was free to roam the western U.S. as a supposed federal asset.

Authorities later linked him to the deaths of stripper LeAnn Emry, teenager Kaysi McLeod, and even his own uncle, Terry Kimball. Despite glaring red flags — including the fact that he was the last person seen with multiple victims — Kimball’s manipulation kept him off the FBI’s radar until families of the missing forced the agency to take another look.

Grusing spent 15 years trying to untangle Kimball’s lies, even as the killer continued playing games during interviews. At one point, Kimball asked why he wasn’t as famous as other serial killers. When pressed on what name he’d give himself, he chillingly replied: “The Opportunity Killer, because I just kill people when I have the opportunity.”

Though some remains were eventually found, Marcum’s body has never been recovered.
