PGA golfer Vince Whaley had an unexpected audience at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi — and it had a lot of teeth.
While trying to save par on the par-5 11th hole, Whaley waded into murky water to take his shot — only to notice a six-foot alligator staring him down just 20 feet away.

“Thankfully my back was to him, so I could focus on the shot for a second,” Whaley joked afterward, adding that he had “a lot of trust” in his caddie to keep watch for any sudden movements.
The gator stayed still, but Whaley had a clear plan if it decided to move closer: “The plan was to get the hell out of the water.”
Somehow, he pulled off a perfect recovery, saving par and finishing the day 5-under, tying for third with Rasmus Højgaard and Danny Walker. Steven Fisk ultimately won the tournament, two strokes ahead of Garrick Higgo.
Whaley, 30, may not have a PGA Tour win yet, but after 135 events and 84 made cuts, he’s proven he can handle pressure — even when it’s staring him down with reptilian eyes.
Talk about nerves of steel… and scales.
