83-Year-Old Father Vanishes After Acting Strangely – Son Refuses to Give Up Search

The quiet suburb of Henrico County, Virginia, has been shaken by the mysterious disappearance of 83-year-old Theo Ever Loving — a kind, soft-spoken father who seemed to drift into confusion before vanishing without a trace last month.

Theo was last seen on the morning of September 16 near the 1900 block of New Market Road, according to the Henrico County Police Division. Investigators say he may have left on foot, and his family fears he was suffering from the early stages of dementia that had gone undiagnosed.

In the days leading up to his disappearance, Theo’s son, Joshua Loving, noticed something was off.
“He came to my room,” Joshua recalled in an interview with WTVR. “It was about 10:30 in the morning, and he told me there was a taxi outside waiting. He said the meter was running and he needed money — but there was no taxi there.”

Joshua said that moment was when he realized something wasn’t right. “He just wasn’t himself,” he said. “He was confused about things that weren’t happening. Looking back, I think that was a warning sign.”

Theo was last seen wearing a gray Dairy Queen T-shirt, dark jeans, and mismatched shoes — a detail that immediately alarmed his family. He’s described as around 125 pounds, with a mix of blonde and white hair and blue eyes.

Authorities have searched wooded areas, ditches, and nearby neighborhoods using drones, K-9 units, and volunteers, but so far, no trace of the missing father has been found.

“There’s no indication of foul play,” a Henrico County Police spokesperson told PEOPLE. “We’re continuing to follow every lead and are still hopeful for a safe return.”

Joshua says he hasn’t stopped looking. “I’ve gone to my dad’s house every night since he disappeared,” he said. “I wait about half an hour just hoping he’ll walk back in. I haven’t given up.”

He added that his father’s home was in poor condition — another concern for authorities, who believe it may not have been safe for Theo to live there alone. “He didn’t like to ask for help,” Joshua said. “He was proud, independent. I think he just got lost — not just physically, but in his mind.”

Experts say Theo’s disappearance underscores a growing issue in America: elderly adults with dementia or cognitive decline who wander away from home. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6 in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once, and nearly half of those incidents can end in serious harm if the person isn’t found quickly.

Dr. Mariah Greene, a geriatric care specialist not connected to the case, told local reporters that “family members should take any sudden behavioral changes — confusion, paranoia, or hallucinations — as urgent warning signs.”

Despite the passing weeks, Joshua and volunteers continue to post flyers and contact local shelters, hospitals, and churches for any leads. “My dad’s out there somewhere,” he said. “I just want him home safe.”

Anyone with information on Theo Ever Loving’s whereabouts is urged to call Henrico County Police at 804-501-5000 or dial 911 immediately.
