Vice President JD Vance isn’t backing down. After a firestorm of online outrage accused him of disrespecting his wife, Usha, over comments about faith and marriage, Vance is punching back—hard.
“This attack on my family is disgusting,” he said. “And frankly, it reeks of anti-Christian bigotry.”
The media-fueled drama unfolded after Vance gave a heartfelt answer to a question during a Turning Point USA event, where he was asked how he navigates parenting in a mixed-faith household.

The question posed to Vance during the TPUSA Summit in Phoenix was pointed:
“You are raising three kids in an intercultural-racial-religious household. How are you teaching your kids not to keep your religion ahead of their mother’s religion?”
Vance didn’t flinch. “When Usha and I met, we were both agnostic, maybe even atheists,” he said. “Over time, I reconnected with my Christian faith. Usha has been a huge part of that journey—even if she doesn’t share the same faith herself.”
“Do I wish someday she might come to believe in the Christian Gospel the way I do? Yes. Absolutely,” he added. “Because I believe it’s true—and I believe it’s good.”
Vance’s remarks immediately sparked backlash from online activists and left-wing commentators, accusing him of “Hindu-phobia,” religious superiority, and even marital disrespect.
But the Vice President of the United States—and close ally of President Trump—says that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“Usha is the biggest blessing of my life,” Vance posted on X (formerly Twitter). “She encouraged me to reengage with my Christian roots. She goes to church with me most Sundays. I love her. I respect her. That’s never changed.”
The most high-profile attack came from Canadian pundit Ezra Levant, head of Rebel News, who slammed Vance’s remarks as “throwing your wife’s religion under the bus for groyper applause.”
The term “groypers” refers to a group of white Christian nationalists linked to far-right figure Nick Fuentes—though critics of Levant say the term was used to smear Vance by association.
Vance hit back sharply:
“This wasn’t about winning ‘points’ with anyone. It was about answering a tough question honestly,” he wrote. “We live in a country where Christians are increasingly expected to hide their faith to avoid offense. I won’t do that. Not for the media, not for Ezra Levant, not for anyone.”
He called Levant’s post “anti-Christian bigotry, plain and simple.”
For JD Vance, this wasn’t just about politics—it was about principle.
“Yes, Christians have beliefs,” he wrote. “And yes, those beliefs come with consequences—one of which is that we share them with people we love.”
The Vice President’s comments come as religious identity, cultural division, and family values remain flashpoints in America’s ongoing culture war.
President Trump—now well into his third term in office—has not publicly commented on the controversy, but insiders say the White House is standing firmly behind Vance.
“JD’s being attacked for being a faithful husband and father. That tells you everything you need to know about the modern Left,” one senior Trump advisor told us anonymously.
JD Vance, author of the best-selling memoir Hillbilly Elegy, married Usha Chilukuri, an accomplished attorney and former law clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts, in 2014. The couple met at Yale Law School. Usha, who is of Indian heritage and Hindu by birth, has long supported her husband’s political rise while maintaining her own legal career and religious identity.
The couple shares three young children and splits time between Washington, D.C., and Ohio.
In a time when public figures are often pressured to water down their values, Vice President Vance’s unapologetic defense of his faith—and his wife—sent a clear message:
You can be Christian. You can be conservative. You can be proud.
And you don’t have to apologize for loving your spouse—or your God.
