Beloved 20-Year-Old KU Student Killed in Hit-and-Run While Jogging

A bright University of Kansas student with dreams of becoming a doctor was struck and killed in a hit-and-run Thursday evening — a crime that’s shaken both her campus and hometown community.

Twenty-year-old Elsa McGrain of Omaha, Nebraska, was out for a jog along a rural stretch of E 1500 Road in Lawrence around 6 p.m. on November 6 when she was hit by an unknown vehicle, authorities said. Hours later, around 3:35 a.m., a passerby called police after finding a body near the roadside. Deputies later identified the victim as McGrain.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, investigators are now searching for a white pickup truck seen in the area around the time of the collision. The vehicle is being called a “truck of interest” and may hold the key to uncovering who left McGrain to die.

“We are asking anyone who may have seen a white pickup or witnessed anything unusual between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday to come forward,” said Detective Lance Flachsbarth, urging witnesses to contact the department or Crime Stoppers at 785-843-TIPS.

A Life Cut Short

McGrain, a pre-med student at KU who planned to graduate in 2026, was described as a deeply compassionate and faith-driven young woman — someone whose presence lit up every room.

Her sorority, Chi Omega, shared a moving tribute online that captured the heartbreak spreading across campus.

“Elsa was the kind of person everyone wanted to be — genuine, kind, and full of light,” the statement read. “She noticed the quiet one in the room, checked in whether things were good or bad, and had a gift for making everyone around her feel valued and loved.”

Friends say McGrain had been volunteering at a local health clinic in Lawrence while preparing for the MCAT, determined to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a pediatric nurse. “She wanted to dedicate her life to helping people,” said classmate Julia Reese, who studied biology with her. “It’s devastating to think someone could do this and just drive away.”

Ongoing Investigation

The sheriff’s office released an image of the truck of interest on Facebook, showing what appears to be a white, late-model pickup with a possible dent near the front passenger side. Investigators believe the driver may have been traveling northbound and could have damage consistent with the collision.

Authorities are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and dashcam videos from drivers who were in the area Thursday evening. “No detail is too small,” the department emphasized.

As the investigation continues, McGrain’s family is pleading for justice. “Elsa had her whole future ahead of her,” said her father, Tom McGrain, in a brief statement. “We just want whoever did this to come forward and do the right thing.”

A Community in Mourning

Vigils are being planned this week across campus, with Chi Omega sisters encouraging fellow students to wear pink and white — Elsa’s favorite colors — in her memory.

“Our hearts go out to Elsa’s friends, family, and everyone touched by her light,” her sorority wrote. “Her kindness and sisterhood will forever remain in our hearts.”
